Default Too much oil - What damage can it do?

Just curious about this. Heard loads of times before that too much is as bad as not enough.

Just wondering what it can actually do.

Hydraulicing in an extreme case( so I was once told) , probably blow lots of seals in a not so extreme case, make a bleeding mess in an even less extreme case.

The problem is when the oil is deep enough in the pan that the crank hits it on the way round, this generates huge pressures of oil vapour/droplets in the crankcase which either finds it's way through the breather into the engine, producing loads of smoke, or pops the oil seals (crank seals etc) with the pressure, spraying oil everywhere.

i have a mate who's a mechanic and he told me alittle story once,he has his own garage next to a petrol station.

He was working away one day when a lady walked up to him and asked him if this was enough oil in the car and could he check it?
So he takes a gander and exclaims that there must be a problem with the breather hoses and they must be blocked as the oil was up to the top of the rocker cover,he then noticed all the 1 gallon oil containers on the floor ,the silly old moo had only filled it to the top with about 4 gallon of oil, cause then he had another job of draining it all

BTW, I was told that if you put too much oil it means the crank will be sloshing around in the oil & causing it to "froth up" which then in turns means restricted lubrication.

I used to see this about twice a month when I was a breakdown mechanic! seen a couple of engines stuffed through it too, one knocked (crank knock) and one rattled as though it could have ben little ends. most are ok after being drained though.

seen one woman fill it to the brim as above but the funniest was the woman who filled her engine with water - literally!!!! right to the top of the oil filler cap with water!!!!! luckily she suspected something wasnt right when it was all oily when it got to the top!!!

women, know your place....on a bus - not behind the whel of a car!!!!!
