The problem is when the oil is deep enough in the pan that the crank hits it on the way round, this generates huge pressures of oil vapour/droplets in the crankcase which either finds it's way through the breather into the engine, producing loads of smoke, or pops the oil seals (crank seals etc) with the pressure, spraying oil everywhere.
