I love it how all the non UK peeps on here arent afraid of a bit of DIY - its so strange how so few UK people are willing to consider anything but "chequebook tuning"!!.

Top work Hansen!!

I love making stuff for my car

I've made an serial interface board for my ECU which doesn't work (yet!) and I'm in the midst of making myself a rear strut strut brace

I'd love to do my own pipework too (intercooler, inlet, exhaust manifold etc) but you need proper pipe bending kit for that.

Rebuilt my erst replacing chassis rails, battery tray and front cross members doing all the welding myself. Stripped it out and put a 16-point cage in it. Built a 1.6cvh which pulled 153mph down brunters. Not bad for a bit of British DIY

or buy it in sections which i think is what hansen has done

only risk is the welds etc holding out under stress heat vibration etc - prob worth putting on something addition to support the turbo (if it aint on already)

What are you planning to do with that mate??, dont know much about Pulsars I'm afraid (other than they're quick!!) - are the ECUs alterable?? or are you looking to do logging etc?.

I remember the pics of you doing your cross member Paul - was very impressive!! - its good that there are a few people who are willing to give it a go (another example being the bloke restoring the white S2 with the ZVH in the resto section!), I just sometimes get a bit disappointed in the way some people on here seem to think your somehow being "tight" doing DIY and your stupid if you dont go to a "proper tuner" - I'm afraid after my experience of "proper tuners" I wouldnt let one service my lawn mower!!

Does the length and shape of the pipes make any difference to the performance of the manifold, i can see that the manifold i have has much longer pipes and is a totaly different shape.

Melv you seem a little dissalusioned with the UK "Service Sector Based" economy!! - I was reading something the other day that basically said that as most of the west is no longer actually "producing" anything eventually all the wealth will eventually transfer to China etc!!

I've read before that exhaust manifold pipe lengths should be "tuned" so that the exhaust pulse of one cylinder should help to "scavenge/charge" another cylinder?? (Graham Bell's "Forced Induction Performance Tuning" book - a good read I found ). Anyone know anything about this?, I suppose in an application such as an RST you are very limited by available space.

oh yep!! that doesnt surprise me at all!!!

ive bewildered on how there can be money in service... service for what exactly?? selling someone elses goods???

the retailers etc buy cheap shit... funding someone other place... but a massive mark up to rip the uk consumer off who all in turn will work in service cos this is the only place that makes anymoney just seems fooked up!!

theres probably some great logic in it somewhere but im not an economist!! im a qualified engineer who has no doubt lost the any skills i ever had working in effectively service situations cos thats where the money is

but this isnt the post!!!!!!!!!! big up!! DIY skills and personal research and development!!!

indeed good read.

mentions it under pulse tuning aswell to spin the exhaust turbine at greater accelerations.

dont think it makes as much difference on a turbo engine as it does on a NA engine. sunny and paul Js manifolds were uneven lengths on their 178-180mph cars!!

It's mainly for diagnostic and datalogging purposes but you can do alot more than that with it (temporarily adjust fuel and timing maps, dowload ECU ROM etc)

There are a few bits of software to interperate the data but the main one is called ConZult -> http://300zx-twinturbo.com/conzult/index.htm

Length and size IS important as is the exhaust gas speed.

That was my old exhaust manifold...new one is equal length. I put it down to equal length not being as nessesary on turbo charged engines as it is on NA however even on turbo charged engine's it will help it breath a little better and make a better balance through all the cylinders.

BTW - Nice to see a good bit of DIY...well done mate!
