Default Motocross for begginers!?

Right, always fancied getting a motocross bike for a giggle, talked my mate into getting one too so we can fling them in his van and go get muddy now and again!

So knowing naff all about the bikes, what engine size to go for or what model etc, is where you lot come in

What's a good bike to start with, KX, RM, CR, YZ? KTM??? quite liking the CR's 125's dont look that fast unlelss in the power band?

Not sure how much to spend on one either, under a grand anyway i'd imagine, as no doubt it'll get dropped a few times!

Any suggestions/pointers, not just on what bike to get but just motocross in general

I got a 2004 YZ250 as my first motocross bike. Found it easier to ride than my mates 125's. it was fast everywhere not just in the band, rode more like a fourstroke whereas the 125's were band only really and harder to ride fast in my experience.

You wont go far wrong with any, rm, yz, cr, kx. Id go for a 125 to get used to it. They have all the power you'll need if your only messing around on it. More importantly though, make sure you get all the correct gear and make sure you have plenty of security or it will go missing before you know it.

I was thinking 125 but thought it might be a bit annoying having to ride in the power band just to get it to shift once I got used to it?

S1rst, It'll be kept in a secure garage! heard of so many being stolen! what sort of gear is needed/good? not wanting to spend a small fortune as it'll just get used for fun/now and again! obviously need a helmet, and i'd assume boots, maybe gloves too?

cheers.

Definitely helmet, goggles, boots, gloves, chest protector (stops other peoples stones whacking you in the chest which isnt fun) I rode mine in trainers when my tech 8's we're being repaired, caught my foot going into a berm when i had my leg out nearly ripped my foot off. not adviseable.

It really depends on your riding style as to what size bike to get mate, so being new to it all, you wont really know what suits until you try it. I can ride a 125 round most tracks quicker than a 250 as i prefer to be closer to its limits as thats where im more comfortable. Some people prefer it the other way round, some prefer 4 stroke over 2 stroke etc, its all personal choice.

As regards gear, it depends how far you want to go, but for me theres only one way and thats the right way. Helmet, goggles, boots, gloves, knee protection, and a decent full body armour are all essentials in my opinion.

Ahright I see what you mean! I'd probably be fine on a 125 I'm thinking, think i'd probably try and push it (until I fall off )

Wasnt sure about the gear, didnt want to turn up to a track with all new gear and no idea, look like a right fudd, know what I mean? lol

To be honest mate you'd look worse if you turned up to a track without it. In fact most tracks wont even let you on without the essentials anyway. You can pick gear up cheap enough on ebay.

Iv got a cr250 and a crf50, i would say go with the bigger engined bike, you understand how a clutch and gears work so all it would take is practice, with a 125 i think you would outgrow it pretty fast once you really get going, i know 125s are fast look at james stewart on a 125 for starters, my friend has a zy426 and thats pretty fast, not as fast as my cr but torque right from the go, the bike is only as fast as your ride it

All modle cr's are bomb proof, crfs up to an 06 where "Ment" to have problems with vavles, many people say that you had the change them every 10 hours but then alot of other people have tons and tons and tons of hours on them, they are fine if you clean the fliter and change the oil often, hondas are known for they're handling, they turn in great and give good feedback mid corner and are predictable

As said above Davie go for a 125 unless you can up your budget a bit then go for a 250 4 stroke.

start off with a 125 yz or honda cr ,it takes a good year off riding to be come a fair motor cross rider, this is if you want to race at the end of it ,the smaller bikes are easyer to hold on to and less pump up in your arms ,two strokes are much cheaper to rebuild than the four strokes ,this is one of the best sports to get in to

.....get real, 125's are great bikes but a 250 will always have more power!

as for a first bike a 125 would be great, only problem is they wear a lot quicker as they rev so much, shouldn't be a problem though unless you get really fast on it. most important thing on a 2 stroke is good 2 stroke oil (normally around 125ml to 5l of super unleaded) & change the gearbox oil every few rides, airfilter every ride (we normally would have a new filter for every race or pratice session.

http://www.mxtrax.co.uk/ is a good source of info.

Yer as said a 125 will be more than adaquate for you, ive been ridding on an off for a gd few years now & have had most varients of bike 125 /250 2 stroke & 4 stroke /450 4 stroke, And am currently back on a 125 (yz) simply because they are cheap to maintain compared to the 4 strokes & are nice an light and have plenty of go heck i still cant use all the power that my 125 offers ...
Get some decent safety gear & have some fun

the 250 will be alot easier to ride, you can evan plod about on them if your just messing about, but with the 125 you have always got to be in the power band and to me it gets boreing, next time you see a 125 blasting round the track, cover your ears and the thing will look like its going backwrds.....lol
anyway just borrow your m8s,your soon pick it up,and at least when you bin it your on grass.......

I have done motocrossing for a few years and had loads on cr's,kx's,yz's,rm's i think the cr125 (red rockets) would be good for you take your tim to adjust to how the bike rides and when you have had it for 8-12 months get a 250cc thats if your really confident on it:ddont try wheeling etc etc first time................you will fly off the back of it as a few eopl i know havetake your time and get a wide open space to play about on before you go onto track

If you're set on a 125 and you can afford one have a look at the 06 yz125's onwards, theyre alot less band only power than a cr and in my own experience are much easier to ride quicker if you dont have much experience with them. I found on the cr's i'd always be waiting for the band to kick in and couldnt relax as much whereas on the yz it was just snap the throttle and you're off.

Like I said earlier though I started on a yz250, bought it brand new, only other motocross bike I had ridden before that was my mates kxf250. I found it so much nicer to ride than the 125's my mates had. It flew when you wanted it too but was really controllable as well, it wasnt any of this no power then bang im going really fast like the hondas. Personally i never liked any of the cr's i rode for power delivery. Stock or modded. Had a go on a crf450 as well and that was awful. felt like riding a tank around.

Guzzler, cheers for the link i'll have a look, and the info about oil/filters I would never of known the oil to petrol ratio!

Defo 125 to start. Bikes at that price are money pits tho. You really need all the gear and buy the best you can afford cos crashing hurts.
I've got a 07 Honda CRF450 the now and love it. Much easier than a 2 stroke to ride.

If you're bored tomorrow get down to Duns and watch the British championship. Its the first time in scotland in years and its a awesome track!

I've got a CRF250 to get "back into it".

Did a couple of meetings then came off and broke my pelvis. Next meeting broke the gearbox. Still waiting for bits from honda so bought a YZF450,

I'd go with a 250 4 stroke to be honest, much easier to ride quickly IMO.

Do it once do it right, buy a YZF 450 and be done with it, go straight to the top with your 1st bike, it will pull your fuckin arms of mind but theyre awesome, soooo powerful!!!

I bought a 02 450 and I`d never even driven a bike before, had to learn pretty quick, had some proper hairy moments I can tell you, lethal bikes.

60 and 65's are for like 6-8 year olds.

Carlo 4 strokes are only hard to start if the shims or valves are fucked. They need checked a fair bit... not so much on 450s though. Mine starts first kick hot or cold.

Same here i've got a ktm 450 and it starts first kick, i would get a 250 four stroke mate easy to ride fairly quick and less maintenance than a 2 stroke

For the money he has available deffo stick to a 250 2 stroke! Cheaper than a fucked 4 stroke and i think you'll enjoy it more less time worrying more time riding. With 24 years having motocross bikes i have a crf 450 but sometime i like to take my mates yz125 out there just so much fun.
