I think a 125 would be ideal for starting off on, need to learn to ride one before going fast!!

yeah but you have a labour charge on top of that if you dont know how to rebuild a 4 stroke, also valves could need doing, 2 stroke is piss easy anyone could do a piston on one of those

What a load of nonsense! Iv youve never had one before get as you said, 125's are awesome also hold there money well so in 6 months a year you can see where you are then move up. You can go very fast and get your self into a lot of trouble on one.

They are not like a 125 you would ride on the road.

If a 4 stroke dropps a valve & wrecks the head it can be very costly 2 strokes are fact cheaper to fix

I saw a KX125 (assume it was a 125) on a trailor tonight, it's a sign

Re-building the engine shouldnt be a prob

A full rebuild on a 2 stroke is about Ł550... a rebuild on a 4 stroke starts at Ł1000 upwards. Not many people work on them either.

why would u want 2 do a full rebuild though?if u look after it piston, air filters etc u shouldnt have 2 rebuild them , go to a track and see how many 2 strokes you see, i had a kx 250 for years and never had 2 rebuild it, and had a crf 450 and never done a rebuild, if a piston broke on a 2 stroke and damaged barell ur a few quid there, ,i still ride a 2 stroke but 4 stroke is way 2 go

i used to race motocross for a few years ,quit 3 years ago due to bad knees and bottom of my back,if your only doing it for fun get a 2 stroke, yeah 4strokes are easier to ride etc but expensive if they go wrong and need a lot of maintenance if you rev em hard, personally id go for a ktm 125 they have a good revvy engine as standard, i also go adrenalintrip forum which is very helpfull and there is a mx swapshop on there you may bag a bargain

Somebody who is getting into mx wont know how to pull the head of a 4 banger, you make it sound easy, and if he is replacing a piston in his crf all the time, then maybe he should be looking at getting into another sport

The whole pro mx scene is now geared towards 4t, only a few brand names now still make a 2 stoke bike, anyone riding a modern bike is 4t, thats why you dont see a smoker or as many as in the 80s and 90s ect, many many many people still prefer 2 strokes and by far the best bikes to start with

2 strokes are normally a lot cheaper to rebuild, plus they dont need valves adjusting etc.... some 4 strokes 'stretch' the valves if over revved aswell.

when i used to build mx engines & people asked about warranty, i always used to tell them that a moto-x engine is normally like a time bomb, its something that is going to be thrashed to death, don't expect it to last for ever

I would have another 4 stroke they are better to ride but as im only riding it for a bit of fun i dont want the big repair bills so opted for a 2 stroke as it would break my heart spending 1k plus if it dropped a valve & turned itself inside out. I have seen a ktm 450 drop a valve wasnt pretty. But saying that i had a crf 250 for a year & only ever changed the oil just luck i guess.

As Ollie says 4 strokes can be exspensive , espesialy when they start eating valves the older CRF's seemed to like doing that. Shimming is needed to keep them starting easily or they can be a nightmare.
Ollie who do you know that races for a living I know a few of the Scottish boys that have went pro through my mates that race.

I have a CR250 and it is a point and squirt machine and very hard to ride on a windy track as the power delivery is either on or off

I was at Thorsby Motocross circuit at the weekend and tried my mates 07 CRF 250

Although it has less power it has more torque and I was alot faster round the track, I felt alot more confident riding it too.

I'll be selling the CR and getting a CRF250 in the future, possibly one with an electric start

Honda aren't going to make worse bikes year on year are they?

4 stroke is the future for sure

(and that is coming from one of the biggest 2 stroke fans out there as I have had alot of 2 stroke bikes)

You cant say ones better than the other. Its purely personal choice. I have a road legal WR450f 4 stroke that i use for enduro's and green lanes, and its perfect for that. But on a motocross track it would have to be a 2 stroke for me everytime. So much better in my opinion.

As regards reliability of the two, yes the 4 stroke may last a bit longer in many cases than a 2 stroke, but it'll cost twice as much if it goes tits up, as already said this thread. And yes thats very true about 2 strokes being a time bomb waiting to go if using them 'properly'. I used to have 2-3 rebuilds a season usually.

i think one of the big reasons the manufactures started going back to 4 strokes was the emmission laws in the States, i remember when there was talk of outlawing 2 strokes in Californa.

If your pissing about on fields n that i'd get a 250, but if u want to get into track riding get a 125 and see how u go, i hadnt rode for 10+ years and went and bought a 2006 kx125 and took it straight to the local motocross track,

Theres plenty of power in a 125 especially to start with & you will learn more imo than jumping straight on a 4 stroke that nearly rides it
self !!

Crap pic but hear is me on my yz125 a couple of weeks ago....

I would get somthing like a 250cc or bigger for messing about, hacking across fields, I had a RM80 bored out to 100cc and it went like fuck it was a midi bike, trouble is was it got flat out in about 3 seconds then once you were there you didnt want to hold it wide open at about 11k for more that a few seconds, if i was getting another one to mess about on i would get a 450 4stroke for sure!

Um i'd say certainly in the case of 2 stroke, 125's are quick and 250's are just bloody brutal!! Not a first timers bike imo.

if i were you i would buy a trail bike first
125cc then when your confident enough
get a 250 whether i'ts 2 or 4 stroke
i personally would get a 2 stroke
also motox 125's imho scream there heads off
