Exclamation meguairs gs220 promlem , me or the machine...lol

I have got a gs 220 da polisher about a year ago.i have polished two cars and waxed about three but after seeing an online video on how to use it i am wondering if mine is faulty or im using it incorrectly.
If i have it on low wax speed (1 to 3) i can stop the wheel spinning easily by hand but it still moves side to side.if i am polishing/compounding to remove scratches/swirls the weight of the machine stops the circular movement completely on the car.this cant be right as surely its this rotary action that removes swirls.
i am not leaning on the machine and rotary action only returns when i lift the machine off the paint.

thanks for any help in advance

DA polishers are designed to do just that, the whole idea is that if you apply too much pressure the pad stops rotating preventing you from burning the paint.

Sounds like you pressing down too hard on the pad (I think it should rotate around once per second) but also if you are polishing you have the speed set too low too. I think its meant to be 4 - 5 for polishing?

Sometimes on level horizontal surfaces the weight of the machine is enough and you dont need to apply any more pressure.

as said above tey are designed to stop with too much pressure.tbh the products should be doing the work not your arms.
ive had mine for a fair while (and i sell them at work) and never had an issue with it at all.

if you are in doubt take it back to the supplier and they can send it for testing(will take a few weeks though)

thks lads,

should have said that polish/compounding is done at 5/6 and the weight of the machine is stopping it spinning.cant imagine that slight side to side movment is good enough for swirl/scratch removal, actually it isnt because the swirl/scratchs remain after.

got from uk so send back is a hassle/cost if i can do some thing myself.

1-3 for polishing and waxing is fine and 4-6 for correction work but it depends how bad the marks are. can you feel them with your finger nail?if you wont remove with the g220 as its not up to that sort of work.you may need a rotory or even wet sanding.

if you are in doubt why not contact meguairs direct in the uk and see what they say.bernadette is really helpful

If you are on speed 5/6 and just the weight of the machine is stopping it there is definatly a problem there.
Give Megs a call, number is on there site.
They were very helpful when mine started playing up, they sent a courier and 2 weeks later gave me a brand new machine as mine was found to be faulty.

Shud just use it to polish really once you have machined the car wax by hand it flies on. No need to really put wax on wiv a machine

It does sound like the clutch mechanism is kicking in too soon if the rotation is ceasing with just machine weight at speed 5 - usually you have to exert a moderate amount of head pressure at speed 5 to stop the rotation action. I would contact your original supplier, or Meguiars UK directly, as suggested above.
