Well first trackday of the year for me today and the car was going well enough but was getting some pretty bad oil surge through sort of fast, hard third gear right hand bends. Car was smoking a bit on certain bends occasionally and i worked out it was oil surge filling up the breather then dumping oil out the breather pipe under the car and spraing onto the exhaust.....a 'lucozade' catch tank sorted the smoking problem out lol but the oil surge i'm more concerned about! What do you guys run?? The sumps are baffled to a point anyway? The car does get driven pretty hard on track so is under a fair bit of cornering load really but i really need to do something about this cos i really don't want a dead engine/turbo! Any ideas/solutions would be most appreciated,
Cheers

Dave,I reckon you may be seeing the start of engine wear and tear causing the heavy breathing. My car is only used on track and I've no problems with oil surge, pressure is always up in the corners, and theres no oil out the breather.Maybe you could try an uprated Bailey Oil breather??As for the sump, the std sump is very highly rated by Karl at NMS.When he built my engine I asked about a gated sump and he told me there was no need.Which I agree with from experience on track with mine. Here's a good link which you will find interesting reading

Mmm yeah i can't disagree with you there micky, the engine's done a few miles now, always had an uprated breather though! Tbh the oil pressure's never been great when the car's properly hot on track, always fine on the road where abviously it's never under the same loads. I noticed the oil pressure dropping off then goin up again on the straights, and to be fair it was chucking a fair bit out of the breather into the homemade catch tank so engine wear could be the cause i guess! Out of interest mickey, what sort of oil pressure do you see on track when the oil temps are say 100 degrees? A suitable catch tank will do for the next couple of track days but looks like i may have to crack on with the steel bottom end build a bit sharpish, got most of the bits at least. Oh...and on reading that thread, i have used an aftermarket sump so that may be a problem, wouldn't know what else to get though? Don't want the same thing happening with the new bottom end that's for sure!

@ Dave,I never see below 30psi anywhere on track, and thats with the oil up to 120 C.Off topic slightly, but I don't think we've met before???Which does'nt mean too much in itself, its just that I've met most of the big trackday players off the RS scene over the years. You doing any of the RS trackdats this year, would be nice to have a chat???Regards,Micky

30 psi is a nice safe pressure...mine doesn't hold that pressure at oil temps that high! It was dropping just below the 2 bar mark yesterday at times which was a bit worrying in itself! I live 15 minutes from combe so will be doing rs day 'car' permitting lol, though i will be there even without the car, think i've seen your car there in the past iirc....would indeed be good to have a chat and share some ideas etc, never seem to meet enough people who track rst's!! I've done a few sessons at trax etc in the past but haven't done any of the full days as i tend to drive my cars to trackdays (could do with trailering really)!! I've only really been properly into the trackday scene for the past 3 years or so but tbh it's the part i love the most!
Dave.

I have no track experience but just a thought... are you using the correct oil? Sounds like it's thinning out too much when hot, maybe try a higher viscosity (I would use 15/50 for normal use and if I were on a track regularly probably even 15/60). But your heavy breathing does point towards ring wear.

@ Dave,Im doing Croft and Nat Day this year. Both events normally have a good turn out of RS Turbos. Can think of 5 off hand who are regular trackday cars. All tuned by Karl at NMS.Plus the grey Jam Sport car in Perf Ford.I used to do Castle Combe RS show every year on track, but its 3 or 4 yrs since I last done it.Best of luck with youre engine, get it sorted, bigger and better as they say.All the best,Micky

Cool, i know the nms cars seem to be the front runners in terms of track rs turbo's, and to be fair the grey jamsport escort goes very well on track from what i saw of it last year! If the car's still going strong into the summer i may well try and give national day a go, quite a drive for me but i'm sure i can sort somethin out! Got steel rods, fresh crank etc, just waiting on a set of pistons to crack on with another botom end now
@Dave,what do you mean quite a drive for you to Nat Day?????Im coming from IRELAND mate!!Plus I used to drive from Dublin to Castle Combe,do the Bristol/Swindon trackday, then drive around the UK for a week and do Nat Day 8 days later, then drive home to Dublin, did that for 4 yrs in a row.Was over 1000 miles in a week, including the 2 most important RS trackdays off the year.I hope Dave your not one of those gay soft southern shandy drinkers that I read so much about on UK car forums!!
