Newman Cams
Thinking of ordering a newcam for my series2 with Solid followers, anybody had an experience with them?
Mates got them in his 1600 CVH non turbo - came off the rollers at 147bhp at the wheels, only thing is when its on full chat the solid followers seem to be qute noisy. is this normal???

My dad used them for his westfield pinto camshaft and wasn't that impressed. I can't recall the exact problem he had but I think it was something around the tolerances they consider acceptable for the bearings in the camshaft were very wide. This was about eighteen years ago so they might be better now.
In my experience the followers are at their noisiest at low load. They will be excessively noisy if they are poorly adjusted.
The reality is that in the CVH engine, you need to adjust these meticulously and check them a couple of times during the first few hundred miles. If the gaps change any more than a tiny amount, the cam will probably self-destruct. It's that simple.
Newman is certainly the best of whats available, but unfortunately not an absolutely guaranteed solution.

I race in the Golf GTI championship through the 750MC and the regs state you can use either the standard cams or up rate to a Newman one as they are sponsers of the series.
Basically there have been lots of issues such as incorrectly machined keyways on the cam so they never time up correctly, premature wear and failure, poor customer service - no refunds etc, and finally one competitor asked them for a optimum timing setting and Newman could only say we don't know but when you find one can you let us know so we can tell other customers!

so mixed opinions then!! each to their own I suppose. Thinking now maybe sticking with something many people have i.e Kent.
don't fancy being in the situation where no refunds and premature wear is an issue though.
Im even more stuck about what purchase now. ha

You're stuck between a rock and a hard place like every other tuned RST owner.
Newman don't have masses of in-depth technical knowledge, but why does that matter in this case? Buy their off-the-shelf CVH cam, get the solid's set-up right and checked and know that you have the best that you can get. That cam suits 90% of RS Turbo's if you ask me. The remaining 10% are either totally standard or wildly tuned.
I can assure you now, Kent and Piper are equally shit and I wouldn't put either in a CVH.

Spec is as follows:
Ported & Polished head
-34 Actuator
Pace intercooler
k&n filter
standard turbo
motorsport developments ecu
was just looking for a bit more acceleration between 2.5k and 3.5k rpm which is why i was looking more towards the newman cams.
Well, if you ask me, you have 2 choices.
Newman CVH cam and Solids. Tricky to set up and needs checking 2 or 3 times in the first few hundred miles.
Standard cam and hydraulics. Personally, I wouldn't even trust Ford to not be using cheaply sourced parts. So, just because it's Ford, doesn't mean it will last.
That's my slant.

just had one fitted to my car was a real pain in the arse to set up and when i phoned newmans up they said we should be able to work out how to use the tool supplied, car seemed nosiey on tick over and it lost power when had it rolling roaded
A solid lifter cam is only as good as....
1. The engine its fitted to. If the engine has poor oil pressure, it's going to cause problems.
2. The person thats fitted it. The clearances are SO critical. Hydraulics are easy, just bang them in, but Solids are entirely different.
If the clearances are allowed to be wrong either from poor setting up or a bit of initial wear, then the problem will soon arise. It's exponential, the greater the discrepancy in the clearance, the faster it will self-destruct.
Newman isn't the absolute answer, but I say again, it's the best of whats available.
