Default Short term car insurance required asap

Hi,

im going to be seeing a car with the hope to be buying it this Saturday. The seller is down in Skegness, and after viewing i will either have to go home without car or buy on the spot and return home with the car. I will not be making two return trips down and back as it will be over 1200miles.

I am after a short term insurance that can be taken out a very short time prior to purchase (a few days max), and to cover me for 48hours, fully comprehensive. Are there such things available? What criteria has to be met by the driver, and will it cover high insurance group cars? Also how can i attain an insurance certificate for the vehicle? I technically will not own the car at the time of sorting out the insurance for it, will i still be able to be covered?

Cheers

Iwent with Norwich Union, do it from a day to a year. bit pricey i thought but if its standard and you give them all the details they e-mail you an insurance certificate. There is limitations but you gotta read the small print.

If you're going to be insuring the car anyway why not just get a few quotes & take the numbers with you when you go to view the car & if you buy the car just call the insurance company & ask them to start the cover straightaway.

Good idea AJ but im afraid im not so keen on doing that:

a) If i get stopped on the way home i would have no insurance docs on me.
b) I would expect the insurance company would require additional payment before cover would start.

vinnyvangough - Did you require to be the owner of the vehicle at the time of filling out the quote etc? Say for instance I buy (and pay for) the insurance on Wednesday evening (before i own the car), and schedule the cover to start on Sat for two days - is it possible to purchase the insurance when i am technically not the owner of the vehicle at time of payment.

www.dayinsure.com

Insure the car for £12 for the day/24 hour period or multiples thereof, which would cover you for a test drive fully comp and also cover you to drive the car home should you need to.

From there you can then insure the car as you please.

You do not need to be registered keeper of the car.

The limitation is age. 21+ only. Also if you know the reg it will tell you there and then if they'll insure it.

I doubt you will have any bother taking out insurance without the sellers permission. The only problem I can see is the insurance group of the car, I think its no higher than group 16 but I may be wrong. Pretty sure group 20 cars are a no go though

I've done it that way plenty of times mate, you're properly covered so even if you do get stopped you can prove you're insured.

As for the payment, all you have to pay is a deposit & you can pay the rest later or cancel the policy & get most of your deposit back.

Just be aware that DayInsure and the like do not cover ANY modifications - no matter how small.

i bought a car today and the bloke who i bought it off was insured so i just drove it home on my third party cover being fully comp on another car.

Maybe if the car is insured you could do this or get a mate to do it whos insurance covers him to drive other cars on there policy

Filing that dayinsure are spot on

Ring them up and ask all questions to be honest mate.
All opinions on here all apply in the persons case. Different rules for different cases i suppose. Ring up a few companys, find out exactly how you stand and go from there.
Modifications are generally a no go area on short term cover, as i found out at my expense.

1) Surely you don't normally carry your policy around with you anyway?
2) Wont' you have to do this when you get home?

You're insured as soon as the company presses the button on their computer. The Police can see this on their screens.

PS, get on MSN so I can find out what your going to see!! I'm really hoping that it's what I think it is!!

I don't understand the problem, what i do is:

- Ring the insurnace company up prior to viewing and give them all the details of the new vehicle and they'll store it on a temp file and get a quote number, i always do this as i say that i will be in a remote area and on a mobile so i'll need to be quick when starting the policy

- If you buy the car ring them up quoting the number and card details and they'll cover you from that second

- Documents are a thing of the past mate, the police know if the cars insured before they put the lights on, i know it happened to me last week

What car is it mate??? are you going for a cosworth???

Chris.

Hi everyone - thanks for all your input. I will be sorting out insurance on the day like BRAMMER and other suggested (thanks!).

Going to look at a golf GTI anniversary, not a Cosworth but I hope you can appreciate its a good car.

Thanks again

Yes im afraid so, infact no im not afraid at all.

Stoo kindly took me about in his GTI anniversary and i was really impressed. Also went to view Tac's mint Saph Cos. Both cars are very nice and equally as tempting. For my current situation: student, and where i work, the newer car would be better than worrying about the cosworth.

Where abouts is the car. I leave very close to skegness and know a few boys who are into vw's .
A bloke i know owns a garage who speciaise in them about ten minits away from skeg

Which way you comin then??

A lad i work with is from glasgow and he goes up the a1. You can get off the a1 at grantham an come down the a52 to skeg. no more than an hour and its one road.

Or come of the a1 at newark and go past lincoln that way.

Woah! Quit the Golf bashing lads. I'll happily admit that my Golf is the best car I've ever owned. It may not be the fastest or get the attention like my previous cars but fuck me I do love it. We all want to be faithfull to the blue oval and keep flying the flag but Cossies aren't exactly always ideal cars for everyday use.

Hope you get on okay on saturday Richard. Like I said, let me know

Sorry i completely forgot to reply to your question. I bought it off a guy in Spillsby. He knows the guy with the VW garage around that area. The previous owner used to be into his RS's, have an FRST and numerous Saphs. He is also mates with a guy who has a cossied escort van (green and silver) - ring any bells?
