Last time I used my car I noticed that the power steering was making a groaning noise as I turned the wheel when the car was at a standstill or moving slowly. This weekend I'll investigate. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what's causing the noise? Loose belt? Any power steering common problems? The power steering is working fine btw.

If everything is working OK and there are no leaks i wouldn't worry about it.

 

That grinding noise usually means its low on fluid.

If that is the case and you are losing fluid you can get some stuff you pour in that will sort the leak if its the seals leaking

 

Good point. Fluid levels look fine by the way.

I'll see if I can see anything obvious.

I bent the steering arm in a spin at Cadwell Park and straightened it with a trolley jack. It seems fine now.

PAS systems tend to groan when working under heavy loads and when at standstill this is very hard on the system. We spend hours and ££££'s at aston tuning pipes and to try and eliminate the groans and other noises. Check the condition of the belt, its tension and as long as there is no play in the rack you will be fine. Had to replace mine after the last race of last season after one of the rack shaft bushings gave up the ghost. Did consider dropping the PAS system and going manual but need more time in the gym before giving it a go.
Give me a bell over the weekend and tell me how Cadwell went.
