Default RS turbo engine issue, with pics...

Number 1 i think it had lost cylinder compression (this was back in sept 06) and my mate took the head off and said piston was ok etc.

Anyhow she has been in storage since and not really thought about her.

Yesterday i popped in to have a look at took some pics for advice.

Valves, i mean there is no holes ?? what do you think?

Pistons with no holes either or any scoring to the bores.

What do you think it was that made her smoke and lose cylinder compression. Headgasket?

I do distinctly remember the turbo chattering not as loud also atfer it happened. I thought it was the turbo at first untill i did a compression
test and a cylinder was down.

Turbo shaft moves side to side a little but not backwards and forwards so i assume she is ok?!

What would be the next step to take now? do you think a new headgasket and she would be ok?

thanks in advance

Carl

oops i forgot to mention the initial cause, the turbo boost hose from turbo to actuator and the car overboosted like a bitch and the subsequent smoke/loss of compression then happened.

is it just a mark, or is there a crack next to the inlet valve on no.1????

how old is the engine, how many miles, the bores look well shiny, try a set of rings and a good hone stick it back together, if you get alot of white smoke on start up while she's cold its probably the turbo so that will need changing and make sure the actuator pipes are clipped up tight !

Hi coswurv, the engine had about 8-10k on her.

She was running fine before the hose came off. Only came off because it had a split and i replaced it and didnt to the circlips up tight enough.

have u actually removed the piston and checked the sides?

a couple of years ago one of the cylinders on my erst was down on compression, removed the head and said piston looked fine so got the head checked over and that was fine so decided to strip the block and check the piston fully, turned out the side of the piston had cracked and so had the ring but it coudnt be seen from the top and hadnt damaged the bore ethier

Could be mate, shall i take that piston out then?

is it worth getting head checked first?

also will it be fine to drop in just a new ring if that is all it is?

AAman: Can you see the crack or not? i cant see it?!

So check the head for straightness. If it is ok then I can only presume its the ring etc?

If its warped then its the head. Skim and re-fit and ready to go?

I have a de-comp plate.

the inlet valve on the right hand combustion chamber in the above pic looks to be open... is it bent?

Apparentely caused from too much boost/pressure.

Number 1 ala going from right, looks like the inlet valve isn't seating properly.

get the head completely checked to make sure the valves are seating fully, heads not warped etc then if all is ok it can only be the block

not really sure, there is a mark of some kind just to the right of the inlet valve on no.1 far left... best bet would be, as already said, get the head checked over first.. that'll show up any probs.

Has he cleaned the block and/or head up since he pulled it apart?

If not, then it doesnt look like its the headgasket, as normally you see black traces on the block or head where its gone.

You got the gasket still though to examine? Thats the only way to really get a good idea.

IMO there is no way to tell by simply looking to see if a Valve is seated right..

a guy on here had a misfire from just above idle on his RST and it was a bent valve.. not that you could tell from looking with the head built up..

Fill the port up with water, and see if any leaks thru around the valve head,
thats a rough indication of if the valve is seated right...

but it would have to be unseated quite bad to run 0 compression

Number 3 on RSTs run hotter than the others, if/when used hard (genearally)
because of the design of the standard exhaust manifold IIRC.
as number 3 is 'siameese' with another one.
