have u actually removed the piston and checked the sides?

a couple of years ago one of the cylinders on my erst was down on compression, removed the head and said piston looked fine so got the head checked over and that was fine so decided to strip the block and check the piston fully, turned out the side of the piston had cracked and so had the ring but it coudnt be seen from the top and hadnt damaged the bore ethier
