Car has to be insured, just like you've typed out.

Otherwise you'd buy and insure a fiesta, and register the cossie etc in any fuckers name, and be laughing.

i dont think it has to be insured by the other person to drive it on the road. problem arises if you park it up on the road somewhere and not on your private driveway. Then it'd be uninsured on the public highway as you werent driving it when parked up

My policy doesn't state other vehicle needs to be insured, just checked.

Although have seen what you're on about, and seems clear enough to me - it needs insurance.

I had a policy on my cossie in which the certificate clearly stated i could

drive any other vechile without it being insured as long as i had the

owners permission and that it was taxed and tested, none of my pals

believed me untill i showed them the certificate so they could see it with

there own eyes, this was around two years ago and not sure if them

sort of policys are still around maybe Tony @ Greenlight can put some

light on it

In most cases if your fully comp and over 25 you are 3rd party on any insured car.

Phone your insurance company mate, its the only way to know for sure.

Worth doing if you are unsure, it only takes 2 mins to find out.

Dan at Flux just told me that the car does not have to be insured.
As long as you don't leave it parked up you're fine.
Considering the policy no longer states the car needs someone insured on it, seems the way now.

Also, on TrafficCops etc, I'm sure they've done PNC checks to find car has no insurance, pulled it over, and driver has no insurance - and driver phones a relative to come and drive it home.

As per this thread's question, if it says vehicle needs to be insured, would not drive it without the registered keeper being insured on it, as it's not stated as insured by any policy.

Yep same here, sure old one's have said car must be insured.
As I said Dan at Flux said ok to drive it - nothing on policy to say you can't, and leaving you wide open to prosecution if you weren't allowed.

Some of my previous policys have mentioned on the certificates that i was covered to drive any other vehicle not belonging to me but no mention about it being insured by the owner, was informed though that my fully comp insurance only covered me 3rd party for someone else's car !!!

I drive that many different cars i wasn't prepared to take the risk of not being covered in someone else's car i opted to go for a motor traders policy and now i know for sure im fully comp in any car i drive whether its insured by the owner on not

Traders policy was a lot cheaper than my normal policy was for a single car so worth looking into if you drive other folks cars i would say.

Covered on any car up to the value of 50k, no restrictions and covers bikes as well, my car policy was around £300 ( Mondeo ST220 ) and my bike insurance was just over £600 ( 2004 1000RR Fireblade ), got the traders policy for just over £600 and have my wife on it as well.

I`ve had many insurance policys and SOME companys allow it, others don`t. When i was with CIS, the cover note clearly stated that you could drive other cars providing that they are not registered to me, and i had the owners consent.

I even went to chelmsford police staition to confirm this, and they looked at my cover note and they told me the borrowed car did NOT have to be insured, just registered to another person, and i had their consent.

Some do, some don`t....

Other car does NOT have to have insurance.
I have driven a traffic cops car to MOT with him sat next to me as he did not have insurance, he was not getting it until it had passed MOT, as had just got house etc and was skint, car was restored MG, that bankrupted him!!

Hi Bigad,

There are Insurers that will cover you to drive other cars (TPO cover) under a standard private car policy without requiring the other car to be Insured - Two of our main Underwriters currently do this.

Usually, the mechanics of the driving other cars extension for each respective Insurer will be upon the policy certificate or failing this within the policy booklet.

For those of you that are with us and wanting to know, either call our office or PM me so I can confirm.

The vehicle cannot be owned/registered to the policyholder and must be road legal (roadworthy) with current TAX/MOT.

One thing to watch is when you park and leave the car, as driving a car that is uninsured (other than with the driving other cars extension uner your policy) the car is only covered whilst you're in it.

So when parking make sure that it's left off road or in private parking.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

Tony

Where do you get a motor traders policy? And what restrictions are involved, i'm fed up of having to pay for short term cover to pick cars up all the time.
