How much play should there be in the rear wheels? I know theres meant to be a little due to the way its all designed etc
Basically over large potholes the n/s rear left wheel sounds knocks. Rear is polybushed, everythings tight and solid, brakes etc are fine, just wondered if there was slightly too much play it would make the knock noise everytime it hit a pothole/solid bump in the road?
cheers

Ive NEVER heard anyone say theres ment to be play in a wheel bearing I cant see it being a wheel bearing anyway if it only happends when you hit a hole

PeterRST i have nipped the bearing up slightly (to the correct torque) and its still doing it. If the suspension turret bush(the big old thing) was worn do you reckon this could cause it? Its the only bush i havent uprated
The play that your on about that it say's it "should have" in the haynes maual you would hardly be able to notice it would be like half a mm - 1mm if that
If theres anymore than that then id say your bearings fucked but that wouldn't cause it to knock just when you hit a bump as i said it would knock/rumble most of the time when you were driving.

why not just jack the car up an give it a good o'l shake an feel for play?
rear shoky might be fucked, top mount....will take you 10 mins max to jack it up check for play an check all bushes!
you shouldnt be able to feel any play in the rear wheel bearing!

Wheel bearings usually cause grinding or whining noises. If it's "knocking" the bearing would most probably have to be totally fubarred with centimeters of play in it.
And yeah, usually the play is hardly noticeable. You might be able to feel it, when the car's jacked up. I don't use torque figures for tightening the bearings usually. I'm surprised that there is one actually. I just tighten it very gently with a spanner and make sure that the wheel's moving freely.

Ok cheers, ill have a look at the top mount. I know all other mounts are alright as i polybushed them the other day. Fuel tank and pump are definitly secure and the shocks are all a month or so old so i hope its not them, lol
antony215 ok mate no worries, think i just got the wrong end of the stick
