Yeah, that's much more likely. Could also be the damper itself or anything loose (fuel tank? brake bias adjusting thingy? fuel pump?)

Wheel bearings usually cause grinding or whining noises. If it's "knocking" the bearing would most probably have to be totally fubarred with centimeters of play in it.

And yeah, usually the play is hardly noticeable. You might be able to feel it, when the car's jacked up. I don't use torque figures for tightening the bearings usually. I'm surprised that there is one actually. I just tighten it very gently with a spanner and make sure that the wheel's moving freely.
