just a quickie here peeps,is it possible to just change the solenoid on the starter motor as it work fine( starter that is) when the car has been started a few times but if i leave it overnight and come out to start it i have to hold the key in the turned start position for 10-20seconds before itll crank over,and sometimes it wont crank unless i give the starter a good whack with a hammer or spanner
ive changed loads of starters in my time but never heard of the solenoid being changed before..

Have checked and clean all the connections? I had a similar problem a while ago, removed the starter and cleaned and lubricated the shaft and solved the problem.

 

Yeah it can be changed, Just unbolt the 3 screws and remove old one and put new one in. Not sure where you get them from though i used a good second hand one

 

Waste of time mate. You can change them but you will have to find a good one or a company that is willing to sell you one, then strip down your starter and fit the new solenoid.

Just buy a new one from Ford for about £80 (exchange for your old one) that is better in every way than the old one on your car.

 

its worth buyin a new one mate, i had two starter motors one of car and one in the shed stripped em both made what was potetially a good starter motor. fixin the problem of it only workin when it wanted to, but a month later it started doin the same thing havin to smack it to make it work. Then it got nicked but its worth buyin a new one

 

Can be changed easy enough.
Most dodgy solenoids are BOSCH, come across them all the time starter fine solenoid crap and jamming, worse when hot.
The problem is the varnish on the solenoid piston rubs off and collects in the tube like housing and physicaly jams the piston preventing it from moving.
Curl up some 600 grit wet and dry, lube with oil and rub inside housing till all nice and clean, then do same to piston.
The put TALCUM POWDER inside and rub around , same on piston clean of powder, SPRAY WD40, let dry put together no more probs.
happens on VAUXHALL all the time only ever had to do above once on each car.

a good auto electrition will overhaul the entire starter motor for about £40.
i had mine done this way and it's been ok for over 2 years now
