Default starter motor question?can i just replace solenoid???

just a quickie here peeps,is it possible to just change the solenoid on the starter motor as it work fine( starter that is) when the car has been started a few times but if i leave it overnight and come out to start it i have to hold the key in the turned start position for 10-20seconds before itll crank over, and sometimes it wont crank unless i give the starter a good whack with a hammer or spanner
ive changed loads of starters in my time but never heard of the solenoid being changed before..

thanks again,rick
