Right, been offered a cheap Focus TD, 2000 on an 'X'. Done 100k, been looked after properly by a meticulous owner. However, it's not a TDCi version which I knew, but it's not a Zetec either - it's the 'CL'. Anyone know anything about them ? Assume it's an 8v pinto based engine ? Not keen now as thought it was a Zetec 16v lump, but before I make a decision either way just after a bit more info.
Thankenyouplease

We use one as a smoke to eat up the miles going round the country, I haven't even popped the bonnet [don't tell the old man as I keep meaning to check the oil level
] but I'm pretty sure they're the Enduro diesel that used to go in the Escort vans.
IMO better than the common rail as there's less to go wrong with the old technology than this new stuff with fuck loads of pressure going through everything

Cheers guys
is yours an 8v job Paddy ? Do they not rev as well ? I know diesels only go to 5k anyway, but compared to a Zetec ? I'm a bit of a big mileage merchant and do a fair bit of motorway work so don't want to listen to it screaming it's nuts off at 80 or louder than the 480 6x2 Scania that I'm trying to get past...............

Zetec diesel?
Am I missing something here?
I thought all zetec's were 16valve petrols.
I dont think any of the 1.8 diesels were 16 valve. The old belt driven 1.8 was phased out around 98 / 99 replaced by a chain driven 8v. Very similar lumps.
The TDCi is just an tourqier version I believe.
None of them are what you would call refined, but pull well and last forever if you do the belts and pulleys.

They're all 8v mate. it's only the new 2.0 and the 1.4/1.6 i think? thats 16v
Also Zetec is just a trim level aswell, iirc it's CL, Zetec, LX & Ghia
There is also a Zetec engine as we know, but just because it says Zetec on the back don't mean it's a petrol.
They're ok really, both tddi and tdci suffer pump problems so it's not worth buying one over the other because of the risk of it going wrong, infact a tdci pump is alot cheaper than a tddi pump.
timing belt is due at 100k miles though so watch for that.
Also all models have a timing belt, yes it's the same engine from the escort with minor tweaks, the focus diesel uses a chain from the crank to drive the pump then a belt from the pump to the cam.
The tddi is almost the same as the escort diesel engine with a couple of tweaks which include a Bosch VP30 fuel pump [try google]
The tdci is again the same engine expect it runs common rail and ecu controlled injectors.

Ah! This is Fords head fuck policy of using "ZETEC" as the name of an engine AND a trim level!
I get a few problems at work when that happens. The other one they did was the special edition Escort Sapphire.
One customer, and oldish woman has got one and confuses the fuck out of everyone by asking for parts for her Mreg Ford Sapphire!

The pump itself cost anywhere for Ł550 to Ł650 THEN you have to have it programmed to the car with cost another Ł 220
then labour and the dreaded VATit was a goddamn nightmare mate , without the car for 3 weeks
good luck

I've got a V plate Focus TDDI that I use for work (commuting). It's very reliable and reasonably nippy for what it is and pretty economical too. It's a bit noisier than the newer ones admittedly, but it doesn't cost me much to run it and I do a lot of miles (current 18k a year just commuting), so if it was going to be annoying it would have been by now.

i've got a TDDi Focus. It does what it says on the tin. Its boring, but costs naff all to insure and is great on fuel.
sits at 115mph all day long if you want it too, and still returns 45mpg when constantly thrashed.
not worried about the fuel pump thing as I have a fully inc. 3 yr warranty on the car

In the last 6 months we've had warranty claims for diesel pumps on a 407 hdi and a Mazda 6. These were both low mileage cars around the Ł7k bracket, not a cheap old derv Focus!
This Focus we've got is used purely as a hack [it's not done many miles to be fair] and was cheap because it's the booted version - talk about last sweet left in the sweet shop
. I'm pretty sure it's the engine from the Escort vans and how many of those have you seen with loads of miles on?Stop being such an old woman and get it bought!
If you want to try it, I can bring it to one of the meetings if you want?

be very careful about the small end bearings, my mates sister has one that has rattling small end bearings, and its impossible to fix as ford don't supply the gudgeon pins or bearings seperatly from a complete engine
- the car is silent until its warm, then makes a right racket, The engine company that diagnosed it has seen several other cars with identical problems, the only way to fix it is a replacement engine. And theese are 60k cars ......

But as said before with the risk of ownership, narrow down the possibilities and get something that you KNOW has been looked after or something low mileage....
OR get a decent warranty
its a 2k car
dont worry about it! Odds on if its dont that amount of miles it will be fine! And also because its not and "expensive" car if the motor does go, well u will be able to get 2nd hand engine cheap enough.
Go for it if its half about car and stop worrying

They're rubbish, the primary diesel pumps always give up and they cost a FORTUNE to fix!
Post up some pics when you've got it
