That's the problem with them mate! When a petrol engine dies, invariably it's relatively cheap to fix.... but when a diesel gives up it more often than not costs an arm and a leg.

But as said before with the risk of ownership, narrow down the possibilities and get something that you KNOW has been looked after or something low mileage....

OR get a decent warranty
