you really dont wanna know!!

on a pretty much standard car...

turbo went after about 6 months...
head gasket + big end about 5 months later...
got it back on the road over a year after that (matey fixing it was takin his time lol), 2 months on and a crack in the cylinder head!!

my old man owned it for nearly 5 years before me and all it needed was a clutch and some brake pads lol

ive had the car almost 3 years and id say its been on the road for about 14 months...

guess that rules me out of advertisin it for sale on here lol

Haha
Turbo went after 2 1/2 weeks[some T34/T4 hybrid]
Fuel pump died and had to completely re wire aswell.
Had a missfire for about 3 months changed every thing then finally found out what it was.
Snapped bolt off that holds the alternator when hit a bump in road.
Theres a few other little bits and bobs but nothing to major. just keeping fingers x now lol

Specs along lines of low comp, ported head, bd10's, T4, greys.

Oh and i have had the car 6 months.

over six years of ownership. One engine build one gearbox and clutch.

The rest just general repairs that you would have on any car.

1992 4x4 sapphire with aircon and electric sunroof, 116,000 miles on original engine and box.
Stage one and everything else is standard, owned the car for a year.

Had a few misfire probs at the start, heater matrix went about 4 months ago and the head gasket is showing signs of weakness at the moment. It does about 350 miles a week. It has not let we down in that time period but its off the road at the end of this week for a full on rebuild - starting to show its age and milage in a few places so going to sort them all out over the winter!

Engine wise mines been excellent,
But clutch start slipping that wasn't too bad then done a diff on the drag strip full boost lauch mite have been something to do with that, and now my 2 month old clutch has broke up and that could be someting to do with using a locked diff since i left my old one on the strip,
I'm hoping with new LSD diff and ap paddle clutch i should be ok for a bit now

And may be letting my right foot have a bit of a rest too!! LOL

I owned a 2wd Gplate 145k mile sapphire for 4 yrs, It ran well for a year- Very little trouble , then it blew a head gasket when tweaked to stg1, then another at Stg3 330bhp, Power steering pipe split and crank sensor failed, the cam belt snapped due to an oil leak behind the cam belt cover , the alarm went a knacker, a starter and alternator stopped working and radiator leaked, 2x batteries died then the T3turbo went and the diff pinion and crown was stripped and the Gearbox followed shortly after. After that I had water in the sump and Ive now broken it for my new project Cossie can cost a fortune If I had left it standard and just drove it sensibly, it may have been OK still, but only the OK

headgasket, radiator, indicator stalk, gear knob, alarm, front pads, 2x CV boots, 2x clutch cables, 2x rockercover gaskets, fanbelts, fuel tank, 2x track rod ends

Not too bad for 13months of ownership

Bought mine in July, standard 2wd saff on an F plate.

Used to live around the countryside, so always through the gears.

Clutch was on way out, changed clutch a month after buying.

Gearbox on way out a month after that, due to dodgy gearbox.

been on and off road since September.... apart from the clutch / gearbox issue, its been great and reliable.

I have my saph 6years now...and i drove it everyday...and still do..
The engine itself is very reliable....it broke a headgasket do to wrong maintainance (spelling)...now its very reliable ever since..with late type escos headgasket and ARP headbolts...

Then one thing which broke very often is an ancilleryhose which goes from the head to the heatexchanger...where the hose turns 90 degree...at that place it opened and spells its coolant...

Some samco's solved the problem...

Since then its very reliable...

Oh...and it had 250K+km's...and stage 3..

go back years and years and years ago (92) andi had a 3 door, stage one and never had any problems with it at all, not with the brakes, not with the suspension not with the engine or gearbox, onlly thing that broke on it was the clutch pedal bracket (i think too many side steps did that ) and it remained reliable all teh way until the engine caught fire and it burnt to a crisp

most people reckoned it was down to either an injector getting stuck open of the loom burning out (which may have been realted to teh smoke coming out of the dash

all this way years and years ago before the intenet and before i knew anything baout car clubs and stuff

bought it with 104k on the clock and it melted with 160k on the clock with no troubles inbetween (even a missed gearchange while going fromt 4th to 5th (while trying to beat a transit of all things ) didn't upset it

4x4 saph, again, stage one (whatever that meant a few years later) had nothing go wrong with it
this one went from 54k to about 64k before it too died a death, this time in my hands rather than sitting onthe driveway warming up

And I think that is just that point, when I got used to the car and used it hard it broke and quite rightly too as it wasnt specced to do that evryday, but it performed well when treated respectfully and driven carefully

I've only owned my Saph for a couple of months but took it for it's first real drive this weekend, it did over 300 hard miles and went really well, didn't miss a beat and had a good few tear ups with M3's and the like!

Current Spec is:

Genuine 82k Miles 2WD
K+N Panel Filter
Scorpion Exhaust
T3 Hybrid Turbo
Bailey Dump Valve
14 Psi
Pectel Loom
Stage 1 Chip

Should be good for a solid 270bhp I reckon, touch wood not had any problems with it at all!

Best car I've ever had from a price/performance point of view.

I've owned my stg1 4x4 10 years now and it's never missed a beat. 126K on the clock, engine/turbo could do with a rebuild, but I still use it daily and apart from high-ish oil consumption it's sweet as a nut.

I paid £11K for it then, compared to two other high performance cars I've had (BMW 850Csi and TVR Chimaera 500) which both lost £12K on depreciation in two years (that's each ), the sierra's been a bargain

So much so that we bought a 2wd a couple of years ago to add to the family.

Bearing in mind these cars are knocking on upwards of 20 years on the road, what do you expect Any car of that age is likely to suffer reliability problems at some stage, it's unrealistic to think you can buy a cossie these days and expect it to run like a 1 year old mondeo TDCi

They are old girls, and need lots of TLC

DEPENDS ON WHAT POWER YOUR RUNNING, I HAD A STANDARD ONE AND IT RAN LOVELY, EVEN WHEN I GAVE IT DEATH. A MORE TUNED ONE WILL BE LESS RELIABLE, BUT STILL I THINK THE COSSIE LUMP IS ONE OF THE BEST ENGINES OUT THERE FOR POTENTIAL ETC.

Hi...had mine for 11 years now, 2wd sapp Cos. Its done 270 000 km and its a st 3 spec car :

K+N Panel Filter
Exstreme Exhaust
T34 Hybrid Turbo
Bailey Dump Valve
23 Psi boost
Uprated I/C
Collins Stage 3 Chip/board
and so on.....

main evnts .....

after one week it blew the headgasket
after 4 years it broke a bolt holding the PAS pump
after 7-8 years I got new rear shockabsorbers
after 9 years it broke the box and the turbo needed a rebuild
misfires due to HT cables, by the way they where brand new
last year at around 262 000 km I did get a new engine, but I still have the old one as a back up...

Mine was actually more reliable when i used it as a daily driver.

Over the past 2 years its had new engine, 2 turbos, 2 intercoolers (well that was thru choice) new shox all round, springs, calipers, 2 fuel pumps, new tank, TCA and bushes (id advise powerflex from now on tho) a steering rack, PAS pump, TRE's, erm....about everything that can go wrong actually.

Probably stands around 10k in th past couple years actually, and its still not got that new paint job id intended to get...

Standard bar a Mongoose Exhaust and K&N Filter,

My actuator has recently gone and I still havent replaced it so its not running as much boost as it should. Also started it up on Sunday to find a fuel leak, fixed that and started it back up again to find it only running on two cylinders

I've also been through two clutches, one gearbox and the seconds on its way out. I've also rebuilt the whole engine and replaced the turbo.

I'm also on my second shell as the first one had a rust problem, in the four years I've owned it its been off the road every year and so far this year its been on the road for three months.

I`ve owned cossies for 20 years and never had an unreliable one yet, they are fantastic cars if you look after them Properly.......They are NOT a cheap car to own, most cossie problems are down to poor/insufficient maintenance or people trying to run them on a budget....Treat them properly and they will reward you with years of fun and good service...

G plate 2wd, stage 3, Rs 500 cooler, RR@329bhp with 20psi boost.

Had it 3 weeks and head gasket went.
Changed gasket and it was still poorly.
Head off and tested revealed a crack.
Another head bought and fitted and it was still poorly.
Engine out, block tested and found a cylinder liner cracked.
Liner replaced and a full engine rebuild.
Sweet as a nut while running it in.
1100 miles after rebuild it was mixing oil and water again after a bit of full boost when coming onto the A1 from my local RSOC meet.

Sold the car, had a runabout for a while and bought another

G plate 2wd, stage 3, T34.

Had it 4 days and it dropped to 3 cylinders.
Took ECU out and put it back in and it was fine somehow????
2 weeks later I cleaned the idle valve because of hunting on idle.
Now its back on 3 again and overfuelling like a bastard.

These cars really dislike me, its a love hate thing. I love them and they hate me.
