Default Puma timing belt gone, told i need a new engine

My V reg puma 1.7 ground to a halt yesterday and after replacing the timing belt the ford dealer has told me that the 1st cylinder isnt firing so i need a complete engine replacement which will cost me £2500!

I've never been in this situation before, can anyone advise a course of action, should i get the engine replaced, or try and sell the car to someone who can do the work? Should it really cost me £2500, im a bit shell shocked at the moment and dont really know what to do

thanks for any advice

Andy

My initial thought would be either a re-con engine or search the scrappers for a 2nd hand unit with warranty.

Whats stopping the 1st cylinder from firing?

i wish i knew, they basically tell me to identify that they have to take the whole top of the engine off and that its next to impossible to get cylinders or whatever for puma's now so its better to just replace the whole engine rather than paying to try and replace a cylinder and then having it fail again.

make sure the bottom end is ok before you throw any cash at it. If thats gone get a new engine, cause it cant be rebuilt properly. If its just top end, get the bits off fleebay and find a decent mechanic and your sorted

Its a main dealer thing...over price a old car so they dont have to bother doing it. They earn more doing servicing work than repairs such as that. There's no need to remove the head either to trace where the fault lays...a simple cylinder leak-down test (not a compression check..and also not a fluid block test..different things) should identify whats failed imo. As said else where I think, it sounds like just a bent valve tbh and maybe a damaged valve guide as well. Ive been meaning to change the missuses 1.7 Pumas belt now for around a year...I think you've just pushed me into doing it at last

Was originally 100K on a 1.7 (still is on 1.4 and 1.6) but it was changed to 5 years or 80K whichever comes 1st.

The fiesta manual has lots of the same components, but not the 1.7 engine unfortunately as that was only ever put in the puma...

Sound to me more like a bent valve then a knackered engine, worse case senario a snapped camshaft, cos thats happened to an engine i've stripped in the past when the belt went.

Ford dealership probably doesn't trust their own mechanics stripping down the head to change a valve

bottom end will likely be fine.

ford qouting £2.5k means they cant be arsed to do it.

Although when they first came out they were designed as a "throw away" engine and hence you could not buy bottom end rebuild kits or bearings etc
