Gun's will be spot on, only loophole he might have is has he seen the calibration (sp) certificate for that day? On the off chance that they haven't got one and the gun wasn't calibrated, he might have a case...

A number of years back I was caught doing 69mph in a 30zone
Sounds bad I know however when I appeared in court the Judge had local knowledge of the road. A dual carriageway which is reduced to 30mph for short stretch.
"I know the road well son, you wont be doing that speed again in a hurry"
"No Sir
Your Hounour I wont!!!"
3points and a Ł90 fine.
I was fortunate!

did you know that one of these hand held units, in common use over here, was shown up in a US court, when it shown that one of the court walls was travelling at 4mph....
1. was it a copper or a civilian operator?
2. was it calibrated?
3. was it being used within its recommended guidelines for distance, oncoming trafic, stationary objects etc.
at the end of the day, you were travelling at what may have been an inapropriate speed for the road you were travelling, equally so, it doesnt mean that the circumstances in which you were zapped were within the law.

The guns are accurate enough for the magistrates, you can try re the calibration certificate, trained user etc but to be quite frank we are rather more switched on these days and have heard most loopholes.
Personally, if he was doing these speeds then he should just accept he was caught and take it like a man.
(mind you I have just had eight hours of people moaning when they are being caught speeding, jumping red lights and driving like fools so forgive me if I sound harsh)

3 years ago I got caught 66 in a 30. Obviously that sounds really bad, but I was done booting it on a dual carriageway just before a national speed limit sign and the copper was hidden behind a hedge literally 50 yards after the sign.
What a Turkey.
He deserves what he gets.
There is a time and a place and low speed zones are not the place.
My next door neighbour was hit by a motorist doing 71 in a 30 and she died instantly.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We all speed, I won't pretend that I don't, but 30mph and 40mph zones are a total no-go for those kinds of speeds.

hoping he gets hammered is a bit harsh when you don't know where it was or the circumstances.
big difference IMO between a 30 limit and a 40 limit in terms of risk
I agree about the 30 bit but not the 40, there's a few roads over here that have been reduced down to 40 rather than 60 for no reason, yet a road which claimed the life of 3 of my mates and a few other unfortunate people gets left as it is
Same round here. There was a fatal accident in the 30 section about 2 minutes drive from a 60 limit. The response was to take the 60 limit down to 40, away from the actual area of the crash.

There is a VERY VERY distinct difference between a Dual carriageway and a 30/40mph limited area. 30/40mph restrictions are in towns and villages, where children could be playing etc.
I am not suggesting that it is right to speed on a Dual carriageway, but at least the majority of people are travelling at high speeds. In a residential area, people just aren't prepared for a car to appear travelling at over 70mph.
Interesting, loads of advice but no one admitting to bein a cop!
Ya never know yer luck you might get a sympathetic judge, and if you can cast some doubt on the accuracy of the reading you might be able to reduce the sentence.

I still stand by the comment that a 30 and a 40 can be very different in terms of dangers.
if you don't know the road then to pass judgement on attitude and nature of the guy is rather narrowminded.
racing on the roads is dangerous! a local lad got put away for 5 years for it. did you get hammered enough for doing something that could of killed someone?
a dual carriage way through a town can be 40 mph as quite a few round london were at the weekend when I went. There is no real way I could se of pedestrians getting onto the road but its still a 40 for noise, other traffic visibility of traffic entering on the slip road etc.
I'm just trying to highlight that generalising it is bad and kangaroo court sentenencing without knowing any of the situation is blinkered.

All to easy to jump to extremes and paint a picture in your mind that bare no significance to the circimstances in which the lad was stopped!
40mph limit could just as easily be a dual carrigeway as a built up area.

Drive like a cock and you get treated like one, suprising that isnt it
Hey I'm not saying its right, my brother just got caught doing 50 in a 40 and I just told him to accept it and get on with it.
Just trying to point out that 30s and 40s are very different and some 40s are ridiculous
72 in a 40 is excessive though so if I was your mate I wouldn't try and fight it, will make him look even more irresponsible if he does

Even that isnt necessarily that daft. There is at least one 40 limit that I know of that you could do 70 on relatively safely at certain times of day. I dont see the point of condemning a guy when none of us know the road or any of the circumstances.
I've suggested this idea,elsewhere........
Why not make all speed limits 'advisory' , EXCEPT those around schools (at certain times of day) and near hospitals and in very busy city centres.
What do you think ??
Would stop all this getting done ,just for a 'technical' speeding offence !!
