Default Zetec engine build

Hi I just recently joined and this is my first thread after reading the forums for a few weeks and not saying much

Currently I'm changing the engine in my mondeo, it's a 1.8, I was wondering if it's worth putting much of the 2 litre stuff on the engine to make it last longer or more powerful. I know the 2 litre cams are very worthwhile but is there anything else such as flywheel etc etc.

The obvious answer is get a 2 litre in the first place but its a spare engine im fitting anyway so it doesnt owe me much

Hi,

This is also my first post. Things sound familiar... I also have a 1.8 Mondeo that could probably do with a partial rebuild.
The cars burning oil and blue smoking when I accelerate, so I'm guessing the piston rings could do with being replaced.

How have you found it so far mate ? I've been doing a bit of reading about taking the head off etc (I've never done one before). I hear that you need to remove the engine mounts and need a crane to get the head off ? is this true ?

I'd be interested in hearing about your experiences, what you've rebuilt, how long it took you, etc

Well, so far Ive completly removed the engine which took ages as there loads of stuff like aircon in the way and bought a low mileage replacement off of the ebay.

The new one is on the bench getting some arp rod bolts to strengthen the bottom end up then im going to use some 2 litre cams depending on budget.

Then the tricky bits....I'm not 100% sure on the manifold as the plastic standard item is utter pants but the rover 820 one is looking like a possibility. While its all out all the emmision control nonscene is off in the bin and I want to build a megasquirt ECU.

Insurance is a killer for me, so I'll probs just keep it as standard... maybe

I may actually just whip the head off in-situ and see if I can replace the rings there.... though I was considering buying a second engine like you, and rebuilding it out of the car, then getting someone to stick it in for me (I dont have the facilities to lift one out).

According to the Ford TIS document, the engine mounts need removed, and a crane is required to lift the head off ?? is this true ? it must weigh a ton if so !

Youre right, the left hand engine mount needs to be removed to get the head off but its no biggie, just support the sump so it cant drop and unbolt the mount.

The engine is indeed real heavy but Ive got a hoist

you can do piston rings, take the head off and sump. undo the bearings/caps(not sure of the correct name) drop the rod out with the picton. change rings and put back in. new shells, piston rings, head gaskethead bolts, oil and coolant should be all you need.cant be more than 120-150 odd pounds
