I bought a quaife MT75 dogbox (real deal one with the strengthened casing) -

Question - Where the std box reverse gear sensor spot, there is a blanking plate with too holes/fitting. One is blocked off and the other is open (I assume for a breather), but oil is coming out pretty good even with a hose on it.

Should these holes be blocked off? Is there a need for a breather for the gearbox side? - I know the centre drive side has a breather.

Also what kind of oil and amount (is it different from the 1.2 liters of the std box)? Right now I use synth ATF in the box and centre drive.

if the box has been properly sorted the transfer and teh maincase should share the same oil, and yes i always run a gearbox/diff oil breather catch/return tank setup.

 

We used to struggle with the MT75 dog box and oil retention due to the breather and type of oil...we ended up I think using atf...but it needs a decent breather, piped to a breather bottle quite high in the engine bay and vented to atmosphere....

thanks - thats kinda what I figured, I'll run a line to the engine bay and get a breather bottle setup.

So ATF is the way to go oil wise and stick with the normal 1.2 liters?

Still strange that the breather port is located there, seems low in comparison to the gears in the box.

I don't think the dox and transfer case are mono-oiled either.

AFAIK the 3 and 6 tooth dog boxes we have had were a standard bell housing, strengthened centre case (to accept the quaife cluster), quaife linkage and stick and standard transfer box....transfer box was still a seperate entity.....

I personally don't like the shared oil set-up, which I've generally only seen on DPE builds.

Don't run auto fluid in the gearbox either! Quaife recommend full synthetic 75W/90.

Breather bottle up under the bonnet is the norm

 

what is the problem with the shared oil setup bernie ? i would have thought this would be better on the whole.
