Default MK5 Fiesta zetec hanging revs.....

sup everyone,

i've had this problem for ages now.....when i depress the clutch the revs will hang at about 1200-1300rpm then when i stop, they'll drop to idle.

it's SO annoying.

I've changed the following:
idle control valve - cured the rough idle and hunting
coolant temp sensor
vehicle speed sensor

and it still does it! it went for a while, then came back!

would it be the little pinion gear that goes into the top of the gearbox that sends the signal to the speed sensor?

the car has no mods all stock.

when i unplug the speedo sensor, it's perfect. only i get no speedo and no milage is counted on the dash.

any tips??

ta.

hi mate it could be the plug going into the power steering pump. its located on the drivers side of the car and its a lightly coloured plug.

Theres two wires going to this plug if either of them has broken then this will be the problem. i have fixed two fiesta zetecs with this problem now.

Deliberate action by the engine ecu's software. Ford made the choice to do this.
There's nothing wrong with your engine.

Yeh it's completley normal.
Theese 1.6 Zetec SE's hang the revs to make gear changes smoother.
Although it's annoying I had to do 650miles in 5 days without the map sensor plugged in which deactivated this feature. It made gear changes very rough indeed!

thanks guys, if i drove with the power steering switch unplugged, would it throw a warning light or not? as i drove without the speedo sensor plugged in and it was fine, just to see if it cures it then i'll try soldering a new plug together

it never used to do this though, it just sat back at idle when i put the clutch in or put it in neutral on the move

I had a look for the power steering plug. it's not lightly coloured but it had 2 wires going to it. located behind the servo. I followed the wires and it goes to another plug that looks like it goes into an air con/ power steering pipe. is this it???

Since when? Neither of my engines have done this at all. If you depress the clutch, it goes back to idle. And don't say it's broken. Ollie Clark fitted the engine and 'box in it now, and it's bob on!

i've read that bridging the 2 connectors will either cause revs to increase or the sensor is broken??.....

which one do it bridge - the one connected to the pipe? or the 2 wire connector behind servo?

Ford program these engines to hang the revs, if you dip the clutch the revs should hesitate to drop for a split second and then drop slowly. It shouldnt drop like a stone to idle. They aint supposed to do that.

Never ever noticed mine do that. No engine just goes straight to idle anyway lol. Although, I have been heel toeing all the time for the past god knows how long anyway

thanks, interesting to see.

my car always used to drop to 1000rpm when i was on the move in neutral or with the clutch pedal depressed, that was ok, coz that's how it's supposed to be, but 1200rpm is wrong, it's too high.

eg - i'm crawling in traffic and i'm at 1300rpm 1st gear, and i want 2nd, so i change, since the revs don't drop to 1Krpm (like they should) but hang at 1200rpm when i slowly engage the clutch i'm actually slowing the engine down with the clutch/box so it drops to 1000rpm, this is NOT how it's supposed to be. constantly slowing the engine down with the clutch to get gearchanges in the low rpm's.....

ok guys, it's defo the power steering pressure sensor. i've sort of fixed it too (messing about!)

all i did to see if it was at fault was, when coming to a stop before i put disengage the clutch, i gave the wheel a little wiggle then foot on clutch and the revs dropped to 1000rpm (correct rpm, when vehicle is moving and in neutral or clutch pressed) then when i stopped 900rpm.

i did that a few times, and now i've no need to do it, the revs just drop perfectly every time!

i'm sure it'll pop up again but for now it's fine!

I wonder... I know I said the hanging is normal, but now even you got me questioning it. I only read it on a few forums so assumed my car is normal.
I have a boomboom sort of noise whenever I move my steering wheel. It sounds like a big bubble moving up through water or oil. I put it down to my nackered steering rack which was replaced. Yet it still makes the noise.
Wondering if I have a nackered power steering sensor too then?

Funny you should post on here today, as yesterday, I put the clutch down on the motorway down a hill (my new exhaust is noisy at 3k rpm lol) and my revs only dropped to like 2200, until i blipped the throttle! Think something is on it's way out

Right it is completley normal. I had an air leak on my inlet manifold. Fixed it all and it still hangs the revs Nothing to worry about. Totally normal.

SOLVED GUYS!

it was the power steering pressure sensor switch - the wire was split inside the plug, so i re-wired it, waterproofed it, and the car is 110% perfect! the revs drop to 1000rpm when free wheeling (what it always used to do) then 900 when idle (correct idle) the revs drop so quickly when you rev it too - they don't slowly drop or hang.

when i press the clutch, the revs don't hang - they drop perfectly.

so bailes1992 - your focus has a problem! try looking at the power steering pressure sensor switch!
