As per title,

My neighbour resprayed his van outside, my car was parked up 3 metres away and its caked in red paint. Billions of spots on every bit of the exterior.

I spent all sunday buftying it outside. Now its a total mess. The while car is rough to touch and feels like sandpaper.

I have a rotary machine polisher, and various other buftying products. But i've never needed to tackle anything like this before.

So whats the best way to tackle this.

PS ive told him, and i dont want him to sort it out, or put any money into sorting it out as I get on well with him.

Firstly I would like to say I'm no painter nor detailer, I just like to have ago first before paying someone ... That said I have come across a similiar problem before and this is how I got over it

Sealey mop machine
Farecla g mop head (cutting head... very firm foam)
farecla g3 or 3m fast cut (3m stuff is new to me)
Farecla g10 ...3 m do an equviliant but I've not used it yet
And a standard polish on a polish foam head to finish ... This should get you back to something decent

For the more stubborn areas I did use 2000grit wet sand with a sanding block (sanding block is very important) first and followed up with all the steps above

I must say though I had droplets of paint rather than overspray so you might get away with just g10 and a polish

I'm sure you tube has vids on how to use any products listed above

To clarify ....I used the cutting head with both G3 paste and g10 then switched to a foam head for the polish

try a quality steam cleaner on the bodywork first... most should come off

 

I've read up on using hot water so will try that first. I dont have a stream cleaner. I wont wet and dry the car as it doesn't need it, minus the spots the paint is 9/10 being as I bought the car brand new and have kept on top of everything day one. Not forgetting the paint looks very thin anyway.

Then polish after...

 

Fully clay bared, Barely removed them. Machine polished used various grades of polish and hasn't removed it. Now the car is gleaming and shiny the red stands out an awful lot.

Ive got it off from the glass all round, and I thought the headlights were glass and have burnt 3 spots on 1 headlight.

So far ive spent 2 1/2 hours on it. I paid Ł13,500 for it brand new all paid off. Its a white car too.

 

Should of mentioned its 2K red paint.

 

find a lorry firm or similar haulier place nearby-they will have a commercial steam cleaner
go easy with even factory painted plastics-but you can blast the bodywork...
a very sharp scalpel will lift the spots from the edge for stubborn parts[lights etc]

 

Just packed up for the day, just shy of 6 hours later. Didnt get much off. But burnt the paint on the spoiler, so he'll get it professionally painted. and ask them what you use to get the overspray off.


So really a waste of a day, 2 items fucked on what was before the overspray a very beautiful clean car.

 

tell your neighbour you've tried everything now you expect him to get it sorted. if hes not going to do anything about it how about an insurance claim against him and your insurer persues him for costs?

 

His van isn't insured, it bought it to fix up and sell. So got no one to claim against.

 

Comes out his pocket then. I've got a similar thing at the moment - next drooled some gardeners in to landscape, and the thick cunts did the cement mixing outside about 3 meters upwind of my car. So I came home 2 days later to find the whole car covered in cement dust, and three lovely splodges of wet concrete (about the size of a 5p) on it. Soon as I saw it I took it down the jet wash and blasted it off, and had to blast the splodges so much it's burned through the lacquer a little. Had it washed the next day and then spent the afternoon polishing it with Gtechniq P1 and then waxing it with Turtlewax. Seems free of concrete/cement now, but the paint is not as silky smooth as it was. I fear it will need a paint correction, or at the very least a good machine polish to rejuvenate it - and why should I pay for that when it was their fault?

 

Wont the legal cover in your insurance cover you for a payout on your insurance as they have a name and address of the cause of the claim to persue costs against?

 

Im that fucked off with the car now, wasted roughly 6 hours of my weekend today for nothing. Fucked parts up trying to get it sorted, Ive been told to try a steam cleaner(which I doubt will work) thats just cost 'us' Ł40. All of this when Its could of simply been avoided.

 

Stop pissing about, yer neighbours fukd up a homer on his drive, he has to pay,
Get it to professional polisher for evaluation of damage, they can normally fix most overspray issues, it'll cost around 200 quid to fix.

 

Panel wipe then polish maybe?

 

I've polished it and polished it. im seeing him tomorrow as hes taking my spoiler to get painted properly. i may just say ive tried its now in his court if he wants to pay to someone to come round and sort it professionally.

 

Checked some local professionals all seem to quote upto Ł450.

 

My partner went to speak to him. he wont pay a professional to get it out, Ive spent 2 hours trying a method a professional told me to do today, that cost me Ł50 in parts. It removed some bits but its still there, and I cant get into the corners.

 

Cant you go through your insurer who will claim against him personally in a small claim court?

 

I shall find out, but im worried i'll tell them they'll put it on their records and try say theirs a claim in the making and remove all my NCB.

 

He has also stated we can try to take him to court but he point blankly refuses to pay out.

 

Small claims him yourself then , then let the courts and sheriff officers sort out collection.

 

He has now said if you want to go through insurance i can. I asked if the van is insured and he has said yes. he said he got no NCB so doesnt matter to him.

yes that exactly where his van was parked and how my car was on the day he painted it.

 

guys obviously a selfish idiot then to either not think or care about red overspray on your shiney white car!

 

First off I can't believe someone would spray a car outside and next to other vehicles...

Usually the best method for removing overspray is as said above a claybar. Have you tried the aggressive clays? Some of the heavy clays are pretty hardcore and although it will more than likely marr the paint it should strip off if you can actually feel the grittiness on the paint.

Possibly a good soaking in panel degreaser too?

Next step would be to take it to a local detailer let them have a look. Personally I would always want to see the car before I quote and maybe even try a little test area to see what I'm up against. Obviously I'm too far away myself...

 

Not trying to pick on you fella but what is a 'standard polish'?

Also for future reference, I'd use a de nibber to cut off droplets of paint rather than sanding and polishing which will remove some of the paint you don't want to.

Did you try panel wipe or thinners?
You've gotta get it off before polishing it...
If you mop it and get heat into the panel it'll burn into your paint. It'll just get harder to rectify.
Try a small area with thinners and check it wipes off...

 

Mark. It will need flatting and polishing mate. Im on hols this week so cant help ya. Will chat to the paint guys at work next week.

2000 wet flat and polish with 3M stuff.
I have some G10 and it works well but tbh you will need the 3M as its finer grade.

I put a post up replying about your 1st post. most have been on my partners forum. Yes to both of the wipe and thinners. So I can confirm we tried what you said and it didnt work.

Paul, Thanks for the post. He went to see his friend today(owns his own bodyshop in Fairford) . He took the spoiler with him and showed him the paint. They used a panel wipe and thinners which didn't budge any of the overspray. He gave him a couple of white 3m discs to show me what they use. he will use that disc/s over the car and then use some 3m polish. They will do it the following saturday morning and return it later that day.

Thats what we use. So it will be fine.

 

Have you tried some petrol on a rag/microfibre cloth? I had a similar issue and panel wipe wasn't strong enough, but petrol worked. Just be really careful and do it in small areas though, and after each area wash it off and I would polish it to make sure there is no petrol residue left.


DON'T SET YOURSELF OR THE CAR ON FIRE THOUGH! AND BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU DISPOSE OF THE CLOTHS TOO.

 

Just looked at those discs.
Hope they dont use them as it will sand the paint off.
Like i said u can get 2000 and finer wet sanding discs which have a foam backing on them. The correct polishing waffles are 15 quid each.
Please Mark make sure they know what they are doing as they can fuck it up big time and it will result in a respray.
