I use g3 witha hard mophead, then g10 and another compund called black top, with a soft mop head, then a lick of polish finally, it will get the swirls out and look like mirror mate

For really top job use 3m trizak disc p3000 grade on a D.A with soapy water. Use 3m fast cut compound (green top) for polishing. For dark colours use blue top. Use these with a hard compound mop. Finish off with a soft finishing mop useing 3m finnesse it or machine glaze.
G3 is ok if the above can't be sourced

Regards
Jim

I like using the menzerna range of polishes, but it all depends on the car you are planing on doing.

I'm surprised none of you guys have told him to clay bar the car first, otherwise he would be rubbing all that grit into the paint, making more swirl marks...

Have a look on the Clean Your Car website.I use the Sonus pads and polish work well on Ford paint. You can also use Autoglym SRP via a da/rotary polisher but it's filler heavy.

Same here!

As for the claying comment, you're right, but why stop there, we can talk about using the 2BM, snowfoam, etc...

dave i use the menzerna and 3m polishes and hexlogic pads
vag paints usually quite hard and take a while on a DA.
start with the least abrasive and step up pad, then polish then pad then polish until you get the correction you want.then use a finishing polish to refine.speed wise you just need to see what works

glenn try the menzerna sampler pack.has everything in it you need to get swirls out and wont break the bank to start out, then just add to it at a later date

Cheers Jamie, i'm new to the machine polishing so just looking for pointers before I wreck it. Using all that with the machine rather than pad/hand polish/pad?

I've read not to stay on the one spot for too long, keep it moving...

going to try on his front wings first as they are getting replaced by VW as they have started to rust so they should give us a good indication of how the rest should be done

i would recommend a rotary polisher for safe use! i still managed to remove paint on the corners and edges using a rotary polisher for the first time! jap paint work can be very soft and easy to remove!! go easy, start with less abrasive compound as you can always move up! and somethimes less abrasive gets rid of the swirls and holograms! make sure you polish out the compounds as the particles break down and reduce in size the longer its used getting less abrasive!

you ideally want to try a range of polishes. start of with a finnishing polish on a finnishing pad and assess whether this is giving you the level of correction you require. if not consider moving upto a polishing pad and/or polish and assess again. with polishing there is no correct formula - different paints require different combos to correct, and deep defects may not be able to remove completely. check out detailingworld.co.uk for professional polishing advice. they have a really good guide on polishing. hth

Throw the G3 in the bin, its what bodyshops use to remove lots of paint fast to improve a bad paintjob, it will actually leave a swirled finish its VERY aggressive
