Laptops
Don't know much about this kinda thing............ at work I can't log on to MSN and loadsa sites cos I work for a Local Authority and they do not allow us. I was thinking of buying a lap-top, take it to work and be able to access whatever sites I want. Can anyone tell me whether or not I would be able to access other sites on my laptop even tho I'd be connecting to the Local Authority server?
Sorry but I've had lots of conflicting advice, and as said don't know much about this kinda thing
Thanks ........

its unlikely you will be able to plug your own personal laptop into your works network and be able to browse the web at all.
Your works pc may have certain software installed which restricts what you can do on it but more than likely most of the restriction is done on the networks its self. Applications such as MSN messenger connect to the internet using "PORTS" Your works network is most likely configured to restrict what ports are open.
Also a lot of work networks allow internet connectivity via a "proxy server" which you will need to configure your web browser use this proxy server (this can require authentication).
Basically, if you cant do it on your work pc - its more than likely you wont be able to do it on your own pc either!

If you know how to do it you might be able to connect to your PC at home via "remote desktop" or a similar application such as "VNC". Providing your works network allows this sort of connection you would be able to connect to your PC at home and do everything your not allowed to do on your works pc on your home pc via your works pc
You might be able to connct to your works network depending on how it's setup. You may have to specifiy an IP address on the laptop, and also connect to the workgroup / domain. There's a chance that all users are setup on the server, so you may not just be able to plug one in and connect. If you was able to connect successfully, there is a chance that the same restrictions would apply.
I would also be wary of doing it, in case they see it as an act of gross misconduct, which some firms do

Of course, since I've formatted my work machine and installed Linux without a user-login for our Internal Systems team (they refused to let me have Windows admin-access, so it was the perfect way to get around it - I now have admin-access, they have no access), they have no way to get onto it to check what's installed anyway...
I look after part of the gaming-network in work, which means I need to have a few games installed on my work machine......can't complain, really!
