Default Need a folder lock/password protect programme for XP....

Right, following on from soneone's post in Gen Discussion, I would like a simple folder protect programme, and all I want it to do is this;

- allow a password to be applied to a specific folder, so that access to that folder cannot be gained unless correct password is entered
- is still visible all the time : I don't want it to be hidden so I have to go search it out.
- remain locked so once you close the folder window, you need to enter password to open it again.

I can't use the standard "make this folder private" function as this PC only has a single user profile.

I have tried half a dozen already downloaded from all over the place and they either;

- hide the folder, which I don't want
- lock it once, but once it is unlocked it stays unlocked (and won't let me lock it again )
- crash my fooking PC and send it on a real go slow

The last one I tried was the best so far but still not what I wanted. It left the folder visible but changed the icon to a STOP sign type icon, and when clicked it said "ACCESS DENIED" but didn't give me the option to enter a password to gain access - I had to go back to the programme interface and disable the password protect.... Annoying!!!!

Anyone know of a purely simple programme (thats free) that does what I want it to do?

If its a single profile machine, why would you want to password protect 1 specific folder?

When I orignally set up the family machine, it was a lot easier to set it up as a single user machine than make lots of different accounts on it (at that time there would be 6) and act as Admin, so everyone would have to log in and log out all the time. Easiest way was to make it a single user account, and everyone has their own folder on the desktop for data, pics, docs, vids, mp3's etc....

I want to put a lock on mine as there is some important stuff in there that I don't really want to be accessed (no, not porn ) and a simple folder lock with password activation would be perfect for what I want....

So far I have tried;

FOLDER LOCK
HIDE FILES AND FOLDERS
FOLDER ACCESS 2.0
FOLDER PROTECTION
LOCK FOLDER 3.3

and another couple I can't remember and so far none of them have been any good to me 2 fucked the PC up and I had to do a restore back to Thrusday and the others either hide the folder (don't want that, it's long when I want to open it) or lock it but without password accessability, so I have to go to the programme find the folder and disable the password. Again, thats long....

Adrian - thanks for the links, but I already tried that one. It allows me to apply a password to a particular folder, and when you click on it it asks you for that password before it lets you look inside it. But sadly once you enter the password it unlocks it completely so you have to manually lock it again

You could comprees the folder and add password:

Select folder
properties
advanced
compress contents to save disk space
folder will now appear blue in explorer
file add password

windows will prompt each time but it cannot be recovered if you forget it!

Would just be easier to create profiles for each user.

Trial and error with this I think m8. Why not just simply hide the folder if you're worried about someone else going into it.
