Default Experts in Processors...Can you please explain this....???

My very first PC was a pentium P90 which had a clock speed of 90mhz...

Then came a 233mhz... (clock speed 233mhz)
then a 550mhz.... (clock speed 550mhz)
a 1.33ghz.... (clock speed 1.33mhz)
a 1.66ghz.... (clock speed 1.66mhz)

At this time i was into overclocking and using good equipment could get my Athlon 1.66 to 2ghz....

Then i had a laptop for a couple of years and lost touch with the latest technology.

When i returned to PC's i found that manufacturers were claiming speeds of 2.4ghz, 3ghz etc etc....

yet unless im mistaken they dont seem to be running at these speeds...

all of the older systems ive had above were the speed of the processor, yet like now, i have an Athlon XP64 3.2ghz processor which runs at 2ghz....

Somebody please explain what the **** is this all about....

Thanks.

I'd been meaning to ask someone for a while...............

AMD brand their processors, like a BMW 7 series doesn't have a 7 litre engine. Intel label their's accordingly.

hmmm...

Still doesn't quite explain it though...

BMW have a 535 (3.5lt engine)
540 (4.0lt engine)
etc etc....

So what exactly does a 3.2ghz Athlon 64 do running at 2ghz that a 3ghz doesn't....???

The AMD will out perform the Intel's 3 GHZ cpu, see the FAO: All Pc Gamers thered started in General Discussion by Tony Turbo.

If you're comparing AMD vs Intel then the AMD 64 bit will outdo the Shonky P4.

SOme things too look at

Thanks Dan,

Its more a question of comparing say a 3ghz Amd 64 running at 2ghz against a 3.2ghz Amd 64 running at 2ghz....

Whats the difference.... both appear to be running at 2ghz....

AMD don't do a 3ghz CP yet as far as I know. They don't need to just yet

An AMD XP 3200 64 like mine running at 2.2 ghz will run faster as it's better deisgned and got more chache, then an AMP XP3400 running at 2.2 ghz.

Mines an Amd 3200 64 socket 939 likes yours, i have a venice core (dont know what yours is...) but mine is currently running at 2ghz....

i get you now....the 3200 doesn't mean 3.2ghz......3400 doesn't mean 3.4ghz...
Like you said its just a brand...

Big thanks for that

I thought that at first when I had my first XP3000 cpu. Thought it was a 3.2 ghz cpu, went into device manager to see it running at 1.8 or something.

They are really easy to overclock and make it faster, but mine's plenty sufficient at the moment.

I was chatting to the IT admin chap at work yesterday (he's a crazy Russian by the way) about processors, and he made a funny.....

I was asking about cache and he says "You know P4? Well, P4 has this built in chace, like a memory. It lets the processor run faster and more efficiantly(sp). Well imagine this cache is half broken and not working properly" (I nod) "You know what we call this?" (I shake my head)

"Celeron" he says
