looking at a new build ...
have used asus for a while but not too bothered ..
playing games like bf2 etc, dont really need dual cards but am willing togo a bit more expensive to get a good spec
q6600 g0 stepping for a cpu ..
want as much ram as possible. might stay on xp pro or go vista ultimate ...
so dont really want a micro atx board but keeping the build a nice cost would be good too (if possible)
only reason im asking is the choice nowdays is huuuuge and having spent the past week looking im no nearer to a spec i like... 1333 fsb or 1066 .. p31 chipset or g33 x38 ip35 aarrggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i kknow asus are twats when it comes to ram though ...
so come on peeps gimmie some ideas please.....

going with a gigabite board myself, as they use solid capacitors so last longer and have heard more good then bad things about them tbh.
asus main issues seem to be funny with types of ram, plus a few other things which just put me off. although im sure there just as good.
going with a p35 chipset, as the x38 doesnt offer anything more clockingwise and the only reason to go with it is for crossfire. at over £50 above the p35, i'd rather put the money towards the graphics card.
sli have just released a brand new chip set which is ment to be promising with clocking but your looking at near 200 for one at the mo.
have u looked at the Q6700/Q9300? they come down in price alot and may offer better clocking with the ram you get

ooooo yeah was looking at them but a bit expensive and do you really justify spending the extra compared to the small increase ... but then again its the fsb difference is 1333 worth it at the minute or wait a bit to see if prices drop
p35 has been here a while now so tried and tested i suppose, and i am not paying more than 70 or 80 for a mobo unless its really worth it

Ive just built a dual processor Tyan Thunder n3600B S2927A2NRF running two dual core AMD Opterons and a Gigabyte iRAM drive which the OS is running in and SATA RAid 0 for storage which mega quick
People so often believe that dual core systems are as fast as dual processor which is simply not the case as the dual core systems are restricted as they share the same memory bus.
Obviously memory is faster than a hard disk and by running the OS on the iRAM drive provides unbeatable performance and bandwidth.
look on you tube for iram to see how quick systems boot and run using it.
Its not a cheap rig, specially when you take into consideration the vapochill case its running in
but a dual SMP dual core rig runs well

thing is if you wait for prices to drop you'll be waiting forever!, i held off buying cos intel announced massive price cuts which did happen (q6600 now 140) but wasnt as massive as expected but they are still comming down slowly. also they've announced a new socket and line of cpu's to be due at the end of the year, but i bet they will be put off till next year.
also with the whole nvidia 9 series thing kicking off and now they've also announced there renaming the 8 series to 9 series (god knows why!) people seem to think its just a rebadge of the old cards or that it could mean a bigger better cards about to be released (so soon after the 9800 x2?)
seriously the only gains with the x38/48 boards is crossfire and crossfire x, as they support pcie 2.0 and true duel x16.
theres no difference in the clocking scores between the p35 and x38.
i'm going for the gigabite ds3 the only board that compares from what ive seen is the asus p5? but i've heard sooooo many compatabilty issues with it, the only niggle i've seen with the gigabite is it will double boot if you clock it.

out of those too brands i know MSI better then the other.
although for the money, i'd personally stretch a little bit more and go for a 8800gts card, as it will pretty much take everything you can throw at it, not to mention a small clock will have it matching the 9800gtx! also the 128 stream processors is nice

yeah the 8800gtx is a good card and i was looking at it myself as it has the extra ram but found for the money you could get a 9800gtx which is about 10-15% quicker and unless your planning on playing games on 22"+ size screens at massively high res you don't really need the extra ram.
but the problem with the 9800gtx is the 8800gts! lol its that question of is that 10-15% gain worth the £40 price bump lol
the HANNS.G screens the better of the two with a much better contrast ratio although even thats not great, if your going for a screen you can't really go wrong with an LG as i think they are something like 5000-1 (5x what the HANNS.G is) with a 2ms response time

seems alright, the only thing i'd have a rethink about is the hyper psu, as i've herd there not as good as they seem.
i'd stretch for a gts as i know you love your games. and i've herd evga are a nightmare to contact if you have issues down the line (german company) overclockers are doing pov cards for £160
but other then that its fine!

not tried it out to be honest .. got loadsof stuff to try and shift .. just got a 500gig drive to use as a file transfer unit he he he bf2 looks like will play on max so happy there.. ran a quick 3dscore on it and got 11950 but that waswith loads of progs running in the background...
just need to work out how to clock it up to 3ghz now..
oh .. is it worth going vista 64 bit?? i know it runs a 32 bit emmulator to do games etc.. just worried it might make it worse

from what i've read etc not really, only unless your running more then 4gig ram and even then the gains are questionable.
once you start clocking it and get that gpu clocked it should really start flying, though a word of warning about the gt's i've read alot of them will only run at a certain fan speed, so when playing games if it gets to a certain point and then crashes you may need to install a fan controler, to help keep it cool. just a heads up incase you panic thinkin the cards fucked lol

windows seing something like 3.6gig?
yeah sounds about right, i think stock they dont have a variable speed, so when you start playing games keep an eye on the gpu temps, if it shoots up it means u need to install some software to set the fan speeds.
like i said i've read a few ppl have had the same issue and have gone through endless things trying to figure out what it is lol

not really unless your running well over 4 gig, not many programs are program to run 64bit anyway so getting games/drivers to work would just be an added complication.
like i said unless you NEED way more then 4 gig its a waste
