Port 119
Evening
Lets try this posting in the correct room mallarky
Right I got a program for downloading DATA from newsgroups (SuperNZB) and set it up with the default settings, just input my news server address username password etc, and the default port or 119
Now for the first few weeks this been working like a dream
, nice fast downloading.
But then one day literaly working one day and the next speeds dropped from 3000KBPS to like 300KBPS
Emailed my news server to see if they had any problems and they said no, and asked for my isp addy which i supplied and they run a traceroute
and "did not see any network congestions"
They also suggested I used the european address as nearer to me, which I did with no differencies
Next they suggested I used ports 23, 1818 or 8080
all which work as port 119 DID
I am now running all four ports and seen speeds up to a peak of 6000KBPS, BUT that has been achieved mainly on the other ports cause you can see the progress bars for each.
Also sometimes the 119 port comes up as stalled.
I cant figure using the same program with no changes as far as i know to my pc that one port suddenly stops working
Have spoken to my ISP and they are saying they dont restrict ANY ports.
But do say they "manage traffic" at peak times. (what do they do to "manage traffic ?)
But this isnt happening just at peak times either tho, cos I try not to download in peak times after being hit by a F U P once before, which just caused major headaches getting it lifted and getting my speeds back up to where they should be.
My ISP is Tiscali by the way
Was on the phone to some woman in INdia for half an hour trying to find anything out when she finally admits she doesnt understand what a port 119 is its not on her sheet
and could I tell her .
Which actually I couldnt cos I aint sure exactly lol, but got the idea behind it at least, so also what exactly is a port just an outlet/inlet to from the net, which a program can choose to use, so in that case just how many ports can a connection have, or a pc.

the answer is already there. as you just have to read what you just posted
that means: they see what you do, and they cut down your speed. easy as that. Most of the ISP does that allot, and usually excuses it with that they need the speed to the other user so they can surf the web with fast speed. and dont some user taking up bandwidth
But do say they "manage traffic" at peak times. (what do they do to "manage traffic ?)

But she was confident it was only peak hours this is happening all the time.
Know they monitor and I have been carefull not to download in peak hours, out of peak i downloaded over 90GB in this last month
That is maybe more than normal (god I love these newsgroups pmsl) but never seen anything affect me out of peak hours before, but before I used to use torrents, know they work different but do still use ports surely, oh and she did say they restrict p2p , but newsgroups aint p2p are they, I may just be downloading a lot of big emails, at least there no uploading of the same ammounts

The p2p traffic have to start to encrypt their files as the the ISP then cant see the different if you are locking on a video at youtube or downloading files.
The news/scens group is ok as you get top speed all the time.
ftp servers is also great if you are running full encryption
(yap news group are based on that)

Steve,
Your with Tiscali so your fucked mate 100%....I'm in the middle of switching from them as they say in the terms and conditions somewhere that they do not support any p2p/newsgroups and when your found will restrict the cunt outta you.... (also think not 100% but depending on how much you download 80GB seems to be the "oh we have noticed you and gonna cut your speeds like fuck" mark
)
The only time i max my speed out is anything between 11pm-1am until 6am-10am but it changes week to week.
Also the same as you the first little while i was smashing it and downloaded something like 220-280GB the first month
Look it up on google mate
As a side note, how you doing bud?
Mart

Almost certainly you have been capped by the ISP. It doesn't matter what you are downloading, 90GB in a month is more than enough for there system to trigger a warning and your DL speeds to be capped. It won't just be peak time either, they will just whack it on permanent as ISPs hate people like you lol
