Ive never done it myself/nor needed to, but basically what it is without going into too much detail is making your cpu(processor) run slightly faster, it depends what processor you have as to whether or not its a piece of cake or slightly harder, and some cpu's dont overclock very well, where as some overclock nearly twice the speed it normally runs at.

If you want a more detailed description then look at this thread on this site, it tells you everything http://www.tech-forums.net/pc/f10/ov...e-guide-20319/

Hope that helps

im a moderator on one of the largest overclocking websites and forums on the net (overclockers.com and ocforums.com)

As stated its basically the art of making a computer run faster than it is supposed to. It is similar to modifying a vehicle in as much as to do it right and to get it to hold together is not cheap.

Ive been clocking now for 14 years and started because I could not afford a PC fast enough as I would have liked, back in the day computers were very expensive.
Now computers are as cheap as toasters the need to overclock has rather deminished and as such I now have many systems which have the power I require that are not overclocked.

Having said that however I do still own a overvolted, refrigerated system with very high performance quality components with a processor speed of 5ghz... its not needed though to be honest

I would personally overclock a 1.8 simply because the system will be worth not a great deal....
If its a 1.8 Intel run a big fan and jack the FSB as high as you can.
if its a AMD unlock the processor, drop the mulitplier a little and jack up the FSB to increase bandwidth across the board.. I would also personally run a large heatsink on this and overvolt it a little.

The stability of these systems overclocked would by large depend upon the quality of the components, specially the memory and PSU

The big question to ask in reality is can you afford to kill the system? - over clocking does stress components and if you have cheap shit it will fail when pushed

1.8ghz systems clocked on air generally make around 2.5ghz in my experience with the right bits

I recently tried overclocking and I got my 1.8 athlon running at just over 2.1, I tried a bit higher but I don't think my PC liked it as I got a System Boot failure

I shat myself

ROFL

The risk of overclocking is always the big bang

This is why i always buy(especially nowa days) a system thats fast enough without overclocking.
For example i have a Dual core AMD 4200 which i got almost a year ago, and a year ago this was an extremely fast processor and would beat most processors back then, and now a year on ok it will get beat by a fair few Intel processors BUT its still quick enough for everyday tasks and also i can still play the top games at playable speeds on max settings(pretty much most games)

djmillsy for a cheap upgrade in speed you could get a new processor for under Ł100, as long as the processor is compatible with your motherboard you'll be laughing

mobile processors overclock the best as they are designed to run on lower voltages so when in a desktop motherboard effectively get a voltage jump which makes them more stable when clocked
