unplug your ntl modem for 30-40 seconds then plug back in wait for it to have stable green lights, then reset your router, if this doesnt work hard reset your router a reinstall the software setup again according to instructions.

you tried phoneing ntl? they have a very good support desk.
when you say it stops working how do you get it working again? what lights on the router flashing not flashing?? also what lights flash and dont flash on the modem.
normally routers once configured unless they get a power surge or not setup correctly just run and do there own thing, if ever i have a problem with my ntl internet i restart my modem and then it runs fine.

ok .. latest update
i am sat upstairs killing the 1 meg bandwidth
she has no connection .. so i stop mine and disconnect from the network..
go and check everything .. its all ok .. so now im totally confused .. she still has no internet but mine is fine upstairs
mine is connected to the router via wireles hers is a direct cable connection...
so .. if i have internet so should she .. in theory ...
im getting some stick here
.... might have to fone ntl and see if they can help ..
biggest problem is its a set top box and not an actuall modem
so i am not the biggest fan of everyone when i have to unplug the tv to reset it

If you phone NTL they will tell you to fook off as you are connected to the net, therefore not an NTL problem.
There support desk are shit, end of.
So you connect wireless, she cant connect cable... Router is registered with NTL ok is it? MAC address of router needs to be attached to your account.
You may only be getting a registration IP address and not a pukka one.

Got some Indian guy to start with, couldnt understand a word, then got a brummie, couldnt understand a word, then got a Welsh bird.
Once this was done all was fine and dandy.

If your girlfriend is connected to the router via a LAN Cable? You may want to check the IP Address's are correctly set on the PC and router. But in most cases thee "Obtain IP Address Automatically" function should take care of that. Also turn any firewalls off on your girlfriends PC and try it.
try a diffrent lead from p.c to router there very easily broke, try a diffrent port on the router also, if that doesnt work try a direct connection from the set top box to her p.c if it drops out may be a broken network card, if your dowloading fine from the wireless its ok. it wont be a i.p address problem as you get connection on and off it would work or it wont, does she get internet when your p.c is on the net?
I think you may have a dodgy router. I had a netgear router which worked fine for around 2-3 years then started doing as you described. I bought a new Linksys draft N spec router (300mbit sec) and the problem was solved. You only need to give them the MAC address of the Modem/set top box if you change this.
You can buy a cable broadband modem from www.scan.co.uk for around Ł25 iirc. Also do you have any software firewalls on the pc's?

Why don't you call them up and insist on getting an actual router rather than using the set top box...
There was a fault with the older routers not being able to handel the faster speeds (5mb+) Maybe it's the same for the set top box.
and if yours is the same as the one in the picture it's one of the older ones!

its on the higest speed they do at the moment ...
1 meg
seriously tho we tried to get a real modem, and they said that we did not need one as the set top box was more than adequate
have found that i need to unplug the router if it drops the connection ... it then sorts itself back out and off we go .. so still seems like a ntl problem, rather than the router ..although i could be wrong .. have tried looking on many sites to see if its ssummit i have done wrong but not foound any conclusive proof yet ...

well NTL do 10meg connection...
For that i'd insist on a router.
the main reason being... the max that a coaxial cable can manage at any one time is 10 meg... so with your tv coming down on different frequencies as well and having to deal with demodulating two different tyoes of signals... it's probably getting over heated or stressed about it some way.
Also... Try a firmware update on the linksys... Ocassionally mine gives me grief but not constantly.
If they still say you can't have a router tell them you want to cancel your subscription because you're not getting the service you paid for

i have just had a long conversation with them .. asking them to transfer my email addy to a different account ..
they say they can not ddo it as i will no longer have a contract with them ... but the account i want em transferred to is a nthell customer ...
told em in no uncertain terms if it was impossible then we will be taking our business elsewhere ... sky and bt broadband ... soon changed their tone then ...
s its a 1 meg connection then there is noway it should be creating a problem ... but they onlky read from a pc screen dont they .. not like they live in the real world ......

NTL do 10mb (trialling 20mb in some areas)
They are only offering you 1mb (which is now 2mb) as the STB will not support anything higher.
Been through this with sister when she upgraded to 2mb (now 4mb) a few months back.
They will need to install a standalone modem to allow speed upgrades.
They will try and charge you for the modem, but sister didnt give up and got it all on a free install.
Billing will change to a separate DD.
http://forums.ntlhell.co.uk is a good place to look too

cheers mate ... might have to cancell the setup here and go again with em to get everything sorted out the best way .. eg seperate modem .. might end up paying more but i need to be able to keep my email going
NTL aren't too bad in my opinion...
But I rarely call them up maybe 3 times in 6 years.
Most of the time the issues is not something that can be fixed by the user and is down to NTL and is affecting many people.
modem restart / linksys router restart solves about 90% of all problems, even if it's only temporary.
They should be able to give you a decent service, just ask to upgrade your internt connection to the 3mb or 4mp or what ever the Ł15.99 service is these days.
might cost you more, but think of all that extra pr0n you can downlaod
Anyway, Good luck sorting it out

been nearly a month now ... an has only had 3 problems .. these were sorted by powering down the router and allowing it to restart ..
upshot is on the fone to nthell today and they have told us that we now need a seperate modem from the set top box to cope with my e-mail addy's on the g/f's account ??????
now im not going to say no to a seperate modem .. but how can it warrent neding a seperate modem to add more email addy's to the g/f's account

no reason at all...
network traffic is network traffic... your emails don't even come down to your pc until you go to get them.
it's pretty much BS but.. the new modem will solve the problem, it will be able to handle the line a lot better, shouldn't have the problem any more!
keep us updated though

Because using the net off a NTL set top box is the worst way of getting the internet IMO
With a seperate cable modem, using the router will be the peice of piss it's meant to be

You'll be surprised at how many home users haven't the foggiest fucking idea what they are doing with a computer, I lost count's the amount of times people referred to a tower / desktop as a "modem"
WRT54G's with version 5.1 of the firmware have a bug in them to do with the way the firmware was loaded at the factory. We had a few of theses in work to muck about with and they had similar problems!! What you need to do is download the latest firmware for it, and follow the instructions to the letter, resetting it as described in the right order!!!!
I did this one the ones in work and they are fine now!

I understand that your annoyed with things going on here but can you please just state the symptoms and how the pc's are connected to the router.
do the systems both connect to the internet if only one is switch on ?
if they are wireless do they connect to the net when hard wired ?
Can you access the router configuration from both PC's ?
what do both pc's display when you enter the command prompt (start, run then type cmd) and type ipconfig /all

aaaahhhhhh so that might be the prolem then .. it has been fine for a while again but have had to reset it twice in the past month .. the ntl bloke who came out and fitted the modem said it was possibly a router fault
Being the cool kid I am I got a WRT54G for christmas... And it was a lot worse than my BEFSR41 as far as options go. I did a lot of searching to find better firmware for it to release a bit more potential but unfortunately i have a newer version that there's no ports ofr yet, well none stable.
so sorry if my approach wa s abit of a linksys are infalible, Just never experienced a problem with them before I got that router.
