Default Subaru knowledge needed!!!

A mate down the road has a turbo off an STI he wanted me to fit to his MK1 WRX, along with some bigger injectors. Don't know anything about Scooby's I'm afraid, I'm just a wrench turner

I fitted the turbo and left the injectors until I find out exactly what they are, because he hasn't got a clue. Even sceptical about the turbo

But she flashed up fine and holds 1 bar of boost, but then stopped and left it until I can find out what's safe to run so he can make his way to a tuner and get it set up.

What boost should I set it at and what's the standard boost pressure supposed to be for this Jap crap?

he must be mad lol car will at least need mappin you cant just stick any turbo on a impreza engine build looming

dont know loads about scoobs but did have one and got told if you change the turbo ect without a remap you run serious risk of blowing it up hence why most of them blow up and get a bad reputation.
i would just leave boost as it is and take it easy til it gets looked at.

I'll just finish it off and leave it at 0.9psi then (from what I read is stock boost pressure).

LOL!!

You can't fuck around with Subarus, they shit engines from time to time anyway, so bolting on a different turbo and razzing it up the road isn't gonna end well... set your mates right foot to zero boost until he can get to someone to map the car for the uprated turbo.

What are the markings on the Turbo??

Don't worry mate, not the first turbo I've worked on

But just interested in others views on these engines, I don't know loads about them, but I know enough to NOT want to have one

as said set boost to zero, then:

a) you cant be blamed
b) he will have to get it set up (then see a)

Scooby engines arent that bad,most who think they are havent had a scoob or if they have theyve DIY'ed them and not had fueling check/remapped.

i had a roller bearing turbo on mine easy to change after taking ten heat shields off ,mine run 3bar boost till i had it mapped an turned down ,mates had 0.9 on sti turbo and shit the engine but think it was more down to the mushroom filter and wrong oil

peak it was 480 brake and badly mapped and set up hence turning it down held 2.3 bar no problems after set up on rollers ,never missed a beat till it went up in smoke

They run between 14-16psi standard.
What colour are the replacement injectors? Yellow?

Should run a safe 300bhp.

Suburus are not bad or weak at all most problems stem from running Jap maps designed for 100 Ron fuel on our 97 or 95 Ron. I have had 2 my current one a twinscroll jdm and are very strong I would defo get it checked out as any engine run outside what it's mapped for is looking for trouble. Although the maf does measure air entering engine and adds fuel to suit but a larger turbo would draw more air and if the maf scaling can't measure the airflow correctly it will calculate fuel incorrect and probably run lean with disastrous results. Any car run outside of it's map tables is on borrowed time

What 'sti turbo' was it.

The early wrx has an upswept turbo inlet on a td05 turbo. The only 2 turbos that are a direct swap are upswept td05's and td04's (it's smaller brother that comes on early wrx wagons)

If it was an sti v1/v2 turbo with upswept intake it's the exact same td05 as the wrx.

Or have you fitted a front entry VF23/24/28/30/35/34 turbo and used a silicone 90' elbow?

Sounds like a bit of a knob ? Why would he want larger injectors with no way of remapping to suit ?
And are the injectors even the correct fitment ? There are quite a few types.

And as James said, what year of car has he, and what turbo is it ?

And various models run different boost pressures. Once yo start swapping turbos etc, the standard boost control setup will not be correct, so obviously this will need addressed.

And the biggest problem with Subarus, is their owners. Bodging tuning work etc or crap maintenance. Is it any wonder so many suffer damage.

for those saying scoob engines are not weak , i disagree strongly, my local engine builder pays his mortgage with them lol. they love spinning bearings on the crank for fun. my mates standard sti type r thingy did for no apparent reason at 40k, it had full service history at the time, he called scooby clinic from the side of the motorway and they said jokingly "we have lowered our labour rate for these type of repairs as we have had that much practice at them we can do them with our eyes closed lol"
he then took it to my engine guy for a listen and full diagnosis, his reply was come through to the build room ill show you whats up on these 5 scooby engines i have in now for repair!

As said boys, he asked me to fit it and I have. I've left the injectors as I'm not convinced they've been serviced nor are they the capacity he says they are. So its now boosting minimal pressure and I've left him with a few numbers for decent tuners and requested he not boot it everywhere he goes....there's only so much you can suggest. After that, its up to him

Or did you at least check afterwards to ensure fueling and timing were safe ?

The engines certainly arent perfect. More failures are down to poor maintenance than anything. And even at 40k, many dealers dont even put proper oil into the engines. So it isnt really surprising some fail.

But Ford mechanics earn their living repairing Fords. Mitsubishi mechanics earn their living repairing Mitsubishis. French mechanics need their heads examined.

Your mate will have to get it mapped, not remapped
as you can't on the older cars.

You have two options get a Scoobyecu from Scott Taylor (Via ebay)
and give him your cars spec, he will then provide a chip to suit the cars
current state of tune, or...
go for a full replacement ECU such as the Apexi Power FC.

The FC is a stand alone unit and has multiple mapping points, so in the
long run if you decide to take the car to another level it can quite easily
be done.

Speak to Pavlo (Paul Balamire @ Zen Performance)
He will provide and map for Ł800 + VAT (Include Commander)


personally I think your mate has opened a can of worms unless he's willing to spend money.

Thanks for the valid advice mate, much appreciated. As said, I've only done what I set out to do, fit the turbo and keep it on standard boost, advising him not to run it stupidly until its booked in with a reputable tuner. Never said I'd map it or anything along those lines, simply fit it.

So at least he's aware that after its fitted, I no longer have any involvement.

You can fit a daughter board to the old ecu's which allows remapping. ESL offer this product/service, as do various mappers.

But given it is almost the same price as a proper aftermarket unit which chucks the MAF in the bin, and you are tied to certain individuals to remap, it isnt very good value for money IMO.

Best option on a budget is SimTek, but it is still close to Ł1k

Why is everyone saying he's a moron for doing it? I'm pretty sure in the OP it said that the turbo was just being fitted, and he was being told to go and get it set up before giving it the beans.

I don't see mention of just chucking a turbo on and going everywhere foot to the floor?

Its because knob heads want to dilude themselves and crucify you regardless of your experience and what you've built, clearly showing how competent you are. But you tend to humour and laugh at them

Anyways, he tell me its going quite well from A to B without any problems or flooring it. I trust his word, he's too paranoid to go against advice, especially from the person who fitted the turbo. He's booked it into a Subaru specialist, I believe its Silverstone in Deeside who also build those MK2 Escorts with rotary engines
