Default Pre-Preg

This place just quoted my work around £35 per M² for 40% resin 200gsm 2x2 twill (120 deg cure) with a 10 M² minimum order where other places want 25M² minimum.

http://www.prfcomposites.com/

All I have managed so far is to make a flat sheet on glass, 3 layers works out 0.7mm. All vac bagged in a oven made from cooker parts, masterboard and aluminum extrusions.

How are these intended to be fitted to the underside? If its simply binded then if someone is will to send us some templates we would be happy to offer a xmas/new year group buy on them

Cheers lads for the kind words

well first you need to learn how to make the molds ! which i might add you never stop learning that , then how to lay each mold up as there all different in respect of how the material goes in ! im coming to realise that even infusion even tho very good isnt the best way to do carbon I.E weave straightness and strengh so going to start to do stuff in prepreg in the new year

Hello,

heat shield is all done, I have a few other bits for Jimbo which have only now been finished and will be sent out Monday so he will be able to give me some feedback on the fitment/quality of the shields etc. I have had to make this pretty much blond as he needed to take the bumper away when he popped up to us last year.

Once he has offered up to his saph and confirmed fitment then it will be available to the public or it may need modding further, we will see.

Will get a pic up tomorrow to show how the final one has ended up

no jim thats the cost but if you think once you have built one and its passed then to retail it it would be around 4k so sell 20 you would have all costs back lol

all this main stream carbon takes long enough to produce and in realistic terms its weak and no where near aero space tech . Its like all the people buying carbon roofs and think there safe doing so because a m3 has one well i wonder how many companies have these tested like bmw have ? i bet they havnt as all the design in meterial strengh and testing would be many times the production cost

exactly. all this wetlay stuff is only a bit better than GRP in strength terms in an impact.

Even stuff like resin infusion and pre-preg wont be much better unless you exactly copy expensive tested stuff and even then its hit and miss to know how it was exactly processed.

You ideally need some proper engineers to design your part lay up if you want real optimum strength.

However most people just want a part thats lightweight and looks "good" so for most people crash testing is irrelevant.

also your point is correct as the only difference between wet lay and and infusion or prepreg in mainstream is weight and about 25 to 30% extra strengh as with infusion and prepreg you use enough resin for the job rather than wet lay as theres no way of metering it , so more resin will make it brital

so in effect if you infused a item with 4 layers approx 1.5 mm thicknessit wouldnt be much stronger than 2 layers of carbon and 2 layers of glass cloth

Carbon cage structures have been around for a while jim but in race cars its cheaper to make t45 or cds because if they need a repair a car then its easier to do rather than right the whole shell

That carbon cage is awesome!!

I worked on the Airbus A380 and in the cargo there is carbon struts holding the main deck floor and one smaller one (about 2 ft long) was damaged and it was €3,500 to replace!!!! Definately not cheap

true maxwell, but its designed primarily to take a load along the length of the tube, not across it. the problem in a big car crash is yes, most cages are strong because the load is spread down the length of the tubes hence the frame shapes, but also there will be side loadings the tube must resist too. carbon tubes made by affordable means (eg roll wrapped) arent that strong across the tube and will eventually fail totally.

plus airbus has a multi-billion research budget to get the specs in limits, most motorsport teams and certainly almost all petrol heads do not

that is why steel in its various forms is used. Its a good compromise solution in that it is tough even if impacted on a side impact failing in a more predictable way by deforming first. You can design all that into the cage quite easily through a combination of CAD/simulation and crash testing. Plus steel is cheap.

True!!! Suppose any blows to carbon fibre components can cause "back side blow out". Looks fine to the untrained eye, but behind the wefts snd weaves have split and there is a superficial weakness!

And people genuinely think that aerospace tech is unimaginable....majority of it is actually straight forward and simple
