its a bit of an ongoing problem i had with the car.. i have a switch in the dash which i use but have left the fan switch plug in the rad disconnected as seemed to warm up then the fans come on but wont turn off untill the engine goes off then the shut off after 20 secs.. everything is brand new.. engine , all hoses, alloy rad all sensors thermostat .. the car does not run hot just wanted to set temp on this encase i forget to use the switch one time and fook my new engine..

shit sorry forgot to say its on my 2wd saff not the fiesta.. well the fan switch is brand new ford one.. the original wireing for the fan gave up when had the old engine in so i re wired it to the battery with an inline fuse .. seemed easier at the time rather than tracing the original wires back to find the fault.. also tried to buy one of the replacement fan looms from abc motorsport but they have none letft.. thought this adjustable sensor was an easier way of sorting now as would be independant.. was originally worried that the engine was not cooling properly as the fans stayed on even when driving but has been to 2 well known garages 1 was for the setup and told its not running hot.. i wondered if wher i wired directly to the battery had too much current running through the ford fan switch and while the car running fused the switch terminals .. once engine off less current and switch frees.. i just ran out of ideas.. even tho the temp gauge reads just below the O on the norm the engine , rad and hoses never feel that hot.. just thinking of the traffic in the summer really and i may forget my switch..

Im not 100% sure how the fan wiring works on the saph. I wasnt sure if when you turn off the ignition the fans run until the fan switch turns them off. Or if they are just on a timer. - this would be important to know to help solve your problem.

im pretty sure its the temp ie fan switch that turnes them off as just driving allong the road they should not even come on.. defeats the object of the fan switch all together.. they should come on at a set temp cool the car and go off.. but mine when i plug the switch in the rad come on once in traffic and never go off even on the move.. once caar stops i turn off the engine and the fans stay on for about 30 seconds and go off.. if i re start the engine the fans are not on again until car reaches temp and the same thing happens.. where as now just using the in dash switch i normally switch fans on as soon as i stop in traffic or lights and switch off as soon as moving.. which is a pain in the arse but i can live with it but if i forget some time it gonna fook it right up.. all parts i can think of are brand new also.. but if their was a problem with the actuall cooling im sure the engine would have showed some sign of it by now.. i have run out of ideas..

at the moment the fans are wired through a fuse straight to the battery so once the fan switch is activated once at its temp the fans come on. only turn off 30 seconds after engine switched off.. unless the fan switch is switching too early or water temp too high. gauge reads fine tho

I had one of those adjustable thermostats that come with the Kenlowe fans. a bit of a pig to get the upper water hose to seal properly with the copper wire going inside. Seemed a bit 1800th century engineering to me so I switched the fan control to the ecu with separate temperature thresholds for the two fans.

Jesse, I think gibbo_frst is referring to a different type of sensor. I fitted one of these (adjustable sensor 'in a tube') types to a Westfield, I don't know if it was faulty but it didn't last a fortnight. Not impressed. It's probably best to sort out the standard set up on the Sapphire rather than 'bodge' your way around the problem.

Hi all,
I have just read this thread and I have to say it is not normal for the cooling fans to run whilst the car is being driven, there should be enough airflow through the rad to cool the system properly. It would indicate to me that there is another problem if this in fact the case.
In the normal scheme of things on the Saff the cooling fans would run on for a short time after the ignition is turned off.
The Kenlowe type capillary action t/stat with a bulb on the end that sit underneath the radiator hoses are notoriously hard to seal properly. and really have no place on a high performance car. I wouldnt risk trashing my Cossie motor with a sudden leak from one of these!
If your existing fan circuit is dodgy then far better have a switch on the dash and keep an eye on the temp gauge.

thanks for the advice peeps.. i read somewhere on here today about a fan switch on the escos that switches at a cooler temp than norm and am wondering if i was given one of these and this may be causing the problem.. the switch in the dash was really only for an emergency if the fans did not cut in.. looks a bit shit with people in the car and each time i stop having to explain that the fans dont work on their own.. as to most people its just a shitty old g reg sierra.. even if it is one ive wasted thousands on..

the common mistake for people to make, is to fit the fan switch on the radiator inlet (i.e. top hose). think about it, whenever the thermostat opens, the water will always come through at a certain temperature. so the fans will come on, whether the car is moving and cooling the water in the radiator or not.
if you put it at the bottom of the rad, or in the bottom hose (outlet from the radiator), the fans will only come on if the car is stationary or there is not enough air flow to cool the water when it passes through the radiator.
