Default problem with my battery

alright peeps
i was drivin me fezzi last night and noticed me dashboard light was a bit dime so i tried all my electrics and everythink seemed fine turned it off and started it again no probs
went for a bit of drive and tried my wipers and noticed they were going a bit slow i thought hmmm sumin aint quite right here carried on driving and when i put the main beam on the the stereo cut off and then the fans started to die out!
ok right maybe alternator problem maybe a loose wire but normally if this happenes the battery light on the dash comes on,
i got home checked the connections by the alternator and everythink looks fine changed the bulb in the dash and still got nothing
the alternator is only bout 8 months old and i wouldnt of thought it would be dead already
What i did notice when i looked under the car was i looked up at the gearbox (please bear in mind i got a escort lsd box in my fezzi turbo) and theres 2 connectors comin out the box there metal and they poke out about 1-2inches no wires just solid pins and also there is a block connector hanging down near the connector im not sure there supposed to connect because they look totally different i followed the block connector back and joins the the loom below the rad!

any ideas would be very greatfull

cheers

chris

to be honest if they are at the front of the gearbox near the mounting they are the reversing light switch. put ur car in reverse and see if the lights come on thats the first thing to try.

As with the battery etc. I had some serious problems with charging etc. turned out to be the feul pump relay wiring was faulty.

sounds like batterys fucked, take it to a auto electrician, theyll tell you if the batterys holdin the charge or not
basically your using up the energy in the battery quicker than its charging up
also check battery fluid, prob low if any

if the fluid was low then it wouldn't hold charge, enough to run it and maybe cd player etc but at night when your headlights on etc its just not chargin enough, fill the tubes up and see if that helps but my guess is the damage is done, new battery, best get it checked by an auto-electrician,wont cost anythin to check and see

IVE GOT A VOLT GUAGE FITTED IN MY CAR IF I HAVE THE STEREO AND AMPS RUNNING AS WELL AS HEATERS ETC.... THE GUAGE DROPS RIGHT DOWN!!
YOUR NOT PULLING TOO MUCH OUT OF THE BATTERY R U AND THE ALTERNATOR CAN'T KEEP UP?

ALSO CHECK THE BLUE WIRE TO THE ALTERNATOR IS CONNECTED AS THIS IS WHAT PUTS YOUR DASH LIGHT ON IDF THERES A PROBLEM!

rsboy82: What are these plugs, can you get a picture, theres no guessing involved that way u can get a definate answer, personally i would say there is definately a fault in the charging circuit, and possibly your battery aswell, the car once started should run forever and a day off the alternator alone, u can start a car and once running remove the battery and it should run from the alternator.

Ive had a few alternators go and ive never had a battery light come on, alterntaors usually only wear out their brushes, and/or blow the diode packs, depending on what happens the light may not come on. If the brushes get low the light wont come on as its producing a charge although it will be a very low charge rate and therefore wont charge the battery fast enough, and if the negative side of the diode pack breaks down the light also wont come on.

If you get me some pictures i can identify the plugs for you, and also a simple test for you, get a voltmeter, charge the battery, take a voltage reading, and then start the car, and also check the voltage, then increase the revs and again note down the voltage. (shuld increase to around a maximum of 13.8-14.5 ish, anything around that is fine at higher RPM)

this happend to me mate turned out to be the battery, got it changed and shes fine now ,, in this weather if your battery its not 100% you will get probs,, you had your alternator changed too? make sure that it was a 75amp on not a 55amp, cuz with the turbo it needs the extra amps for things like fogs and heated screen etc.if its not your battery will struggle. worth a try?? let us know how is goes

A car should run once started from the alternator alone?

Do RS's come from the factory with a 75amp do they?? I put a 55amp on my cabriolet when i converted that, seems fine and ive got a fucking MASSIVE battery on it lol

Another possibility could be old wiring that needs replacing

I meant to put that in aswell, when i did my engine i got rid of the standard charging lead as they common to braking down, and used a piece of 8AWG amp cable, didn't want to have to mess around with it.

did the job, thicker than the standard item too

hi cheers for all the help
Ive just been and got a new battery fitted all in and turned the key and i still have no battery light on my ignition started the car and have no probs also changed the dash bulb light as well for the battery light but still no light.
Put a voltmeter onto the battery and it sits at 12.12 i rev it and it drops to 12.11 then bk to 12.12
When i turn the electrics on it drops to 11.08
Ive also tried one of these alternator testers and it says its charging 0-25% but when i put the electrics on it drops below the reading
Ive checked all the connections on the alternator even cleaned off the earth contacts on the battery tray and still no luck
has anybody got a definate answer
I 85% think its the alternator but has anybody got any more opinions before i take it off and take it back to the shop

cheers

Hello mate

Right, 12.12 volts, the alternator ISN'T charging, and is proved by the fact of when u rev it the voltage goes down (i bet when u flick it off the battery voltage goes up aswell yeah?). This i am 99.9% sure will be the fact the battery light is not working. The alternator relies on the dash light to commence charging (if the bulb goes it won't charge), now you say you've changed the bulb, and all the connections are plugged in. That could suggest a wiring fault.

Firstly, are u sure the bulb u replaced works? If so try this: There should be a very thin wire going to the alter not (green in colour im led to believe, and should be obvious as the only other wire will be a thick red going to the starter), it should have a plug on it, unplug it, switch on the ignition and touch it on something connected to the body of the car (like the alternator body, or similar) if the bulb doesnt light and you are positive the bulb is good its a wiring fault.

Let me know how u get on or if u need any more help

cheers dude ill try that when i get home and let ya know asap.
so just to clarify dude i should remove the blue thin cable from the alternator and then touch it to some where on the body or alternator housing if the dashboard light comes on then its defo the alternator if it doesnt come on then theres a wiring problem?
