Hi all
Have had some trouble with my brakes of late.
At very slow speed (ie approaching a junction), my abs cuts in lightly, also when driving along, sometimes I have to do a double push on the ol' brake pedal to get full feel.
Help? Any ideas?
Only mods really are 4wd brakes to rear, and standard to front. ABS light isn't on, as normal
HELP HELP HELP HELP!!!!
Thanks
JJ

~Thanks guys
I will get the car up on a ramp, and go through all of the wheel speed sensors to check.
I am glad to hear nobody has pointed a finger at the pump/ master cyl!

Well back to the drawing board
I have taken out all four of the sensors, cleaned them, and cleaned up the teeth. No obvious faults on either sensors or the teeth
Any more ideas??
Thanks

it's definitley a sensor fault.
what condition were the sensors? did they all have the rubber bit on the end, and the 2 metal bars rust free?
did you clean the earth points as well?
have you checked the connections on the inner wings?

Hi mate,
I must admit, the rubber on one of the rear sensors was in a crappy condition, though the metal strips in the sensor appeared rust free. Hmm. Maybe this one needs replacement. I must admit, I didn't check the connectors, I will check tomorrow.
Re earth points, yes I scraped with scalpel both sides, though I would have expected a faulty earth to trigger the abs fault light?
Thanks for the advice, all gratefully received!!!!
I will see if I can find a sensor to replace the rear dodgy one!

it's an imbalance in speeds between the front and rear that gives the symptoms that you have, and i've found that it's normally the front sesnors at fault.
granada used the same sensors but with longer cables, so you could try swapping some around with some from a scrapper. don't bother buying ones with the see through rubber bit on the end damaged though.

Thanks for the info. Most interesting. The fronts looked pretty tidy.
I have a friend who has a sierra laid up with ABS (non cosworth). Providing that the sensors match, I will borrow his to see if the problem goes away.
Thanks again for the help, I will report back

they'll do. swap them out one by one and you should find the problem. let us know how you get on, as this is a common problem that a lot of people would like to know how to rectify.

are you running your car with a turbo heatshield?i ran mine without one for a day and the heat messes with the abs.it pulsed through the pedal when you push on it sometimes even if you are completely stopped.

Interesting point about the heatshield! Truthfully, the heatshield is not what it once was, thought the problem has only recently occurred with the braking.
As it happens I am due a new one, and will let you know if it assists.
I am still trying to find time to try the ABS sensors as well. I will do each in independence so I can give a definitive answer as to why the problem occurs.
Will keep you posted.....

Right - Update and possibly more info required
I have not done all that I am going to, but had chance to change what I thought was the most suspicious sensor!
One of the rear sensors had almost none of the resin left on the pick-ups, so I changed for one off a car I had been led to believe had ABS that worked. My further investigations revealed that the reason the donor cars abs seemed to work was because the light bulb had been removed from the dash - idiots!
So I changed the rear sensor with the supposedly good one and no change.
This is the confusion.
When I first posted this, I had two problems, the ABS cutting in at very low speeds, and needing to push the brake pedal twice before getting good feel at all speeds.
After I cleaned up the sensors as suggested, the second problem went away, leaving me with the first problem only. Having changed this sensor over, the second problem has now come back!!! - I have yet to change it back with the old one until I find/ buy good sensors to replace existing, to make sure that this is not just coincidence.
Any ideas? Could this be a defective master cyl/ abs pump/ brain?
Help!?!?

i have not known any of the other parts to have problems. in my experience, it has always been a sensor fault, and your symptoms are still the same as what i've had before and cured with new (used) sensors

Hi All
PROBLEM SOLVED
Right
The problem in the end had nothing to do with the sensors (well, nothing directly anyway).
During our last change, we noticed that one of the wheel bearings had excessive play. How we missed this before is beyond me, but there we go.
Replaced bearing, and then abs wheel (attached to rear of bearing housing) suddenly is solid, and hey presto - solid braking just like it were new!!!!!!
Lesson learnt. Thanks for all the help, and I hope that this helps anybody else with the same problem
On to the next problem....!
Cheers
JJ
