Default smokey fiesta. help!!

hey people i have a fiesta turbo and it is very very smokey when warming up but doesnt smoke when it is warm.

first though it was the valve stem seals and as im a trained ford mechanic i replaced them as well some of the valve guide. but to my digust that didnt solve the problem .

so i started goin down the engine road done all sorts of tests and then a friend convinced me to rebuild the engine which i did myself i relaced rings bearings i even bought a new cam kit which left a healthy hole in my pocket (it was worth it though) rebuild the head from scratch re seated all the valves and put the engine back together perfect.

this also didnt get rid of the smoke but the car goes really well the engine is sweet . so it has to be the turbo right . well im just after rebuilding that got it professionally balanced new seals the lot but now the smoke is now worse . it will only smokes on warm up and it will only happen when its at idle when its on boost its fine and it drives great and no smoke

as far as i know this should not happen. has anyone ever come across anything like this. im going mad i just feel like gettin rid the car or putting a match to it

any help would be greatly appreciated

check the turbo oil return pipe the oil to the block one it's clogged up over the years and so the oil from cold/warm CANT return quick enough so stays in the turbo that bit longer thus causing the burning of oil IMO!

hmmmm im having a similar problem with my cabriolet

endless list of problems, but after being off road ALL SUMMER i started it up all excited tons of blue smoke, had a bit of a head scratching session, found a valve guide pushed in, cant see how it happened or why it didnt smoke before but ANYWAY got a new valve guide fitted, £80 later and head re-fitted, it starts and smokes for about 30 seconds then is fine

the engine was rebuilt 3.5k ago??????????

I've had them pipes look mint on the outside but under the braided part the pipe inside MUST be fucked cause what you describe is a VERY common fault some people end up running a t3 turbo or selling the whole car cause they CANT suss it out

you may have to get a pipe made thou as their NLA from frauds

well i got a new pipe in from ford cost 40 euro should of been more but luckily i get staff discount goin to replace it soon hopefully.

if that doesnt work i have a t3 turbo and escort engine in a project mk2 fiesta i will just put that turbo on but i dont really want to it all seems a bit messy. i have an oil pressure gauge on the engine and the pressure does seem within spec .

i did have 2 valve guides replaced before cause they did slip further into the head so thats all covered.

as far as i can see it has to be this poxy pipe
right im goin out to brave the elements

get a big oil return conversion, it will solve it trust me cos sounds like the oil is building up in the turbo from where it cant get through quick enough. look in your intercooler and the pipes that go to the intercooler bet they are covered in oil inside

oh

just getting a few seconds of smoke from mine on startup.

Its done 3.5k on a rebuild, head has just been re-fitted as i had to change a valve guide, so therefore its got brand new stem seals. I re-built the turbo myself while the head was off, with a minor service kit which had all new bearings, thrsut bearings and oil seals.

I also replaced the oil return hose as the old one was split, but i used to a samco 90 degree elbow, was a nightmare to fit looking at it now, a 45degree would of done it better. Could possibly be getting a build up in the pipe??

Is oil in the boost pipes a reult of oil pressure building up in the turbo?

if you have oil in the boost pipes then either turbo seals are gone or the oil just cant get out of the turbo as quick as it gets in so you get a build up. sure it aint condensation for few seconds?

no i know exactly what you are saying though, i start it, after about 2 seconds the blue smoke comes out, for about 10 seconds which by then steam has also started coming out, but u can tell the difference in the colour.

Well to be honest the car never ever smoked before, but the turbo was second hand, and i had the head off so i thought i may aswell re-build it as chances were it would of gone soon.

All it does literally is this tiny smoke when it starts and no other time.

The only other thing is ive changed oil since putting the head back on.

Before it had comma 5w40 for the initial 3.5k, i thought it deserved a change, and now im using Mobil 1 10w40 as my mate works for Renault and gets it me free (cheers dan), thats the only other thing that comes to mind is perhaps its the different although i cant see that would make a difference. Although slightly thicker..?

hmm not sure if that would effect it. take one of ya pipes off and see if there is any oil about or any oil in the intercooler. just keep an eye on it and see if it gets any worse

well there was a tiny amount of oil in the pipes before, no puddles or anything like that.

I have literally only done a few miles in the car since re-fitting the turbo, no serious driving as yet? That new pipe doesnt fit fantastically on the oil return though, so the oil might be building up when i first start it? I'll have to do some experimenting.

VERY NICE CAR BY THE WAY

Why the R.I.P ???? has it died a death?
