Master cylinder sizes on a cosworth 2wd.SOMEONE MUST KNOW
Ok
ive finally just driven my turbo'd mk3 cabriolet for the first time after some quite extensive (not to mention time consuming, and missed all the summer weather ) work, part of which was a FULL 2wd cossie brake set up.
4 pots on the front, disc conversion on the rear, and a 90 spec master cylinder as theyre slightly bigger.
Now....what im hoping someone will help me answer?
THEY FEEL SHITE!!!!!! the pedal has a fair bit of travel and i was expecting some serious G's when braking.....just dont feel any better than the standard brakes to be honest?
anybody else experienced this?
and anyone know why the pedal has the long travel?
im guessing its because the master cylinder isnt really up to it? could do with being a bit bigger?
I posted on here a while back when i was having problems and someone also suggested using the nut in the brake servo to reduce the travel in the pedal, im not keen as this to me just seems like having the brakes partially applied all the time?
hope someone can help

right here goes the nipple on the cossie calipers faces the floor on the rears this is no good for bleeding the brakes as u cannot get the air locks out !
u need to unbolt the caliper and turn it round the disc to the top so the nipple faces upwards! then get someone to pump the pedal whiclst u hold the caliper in place then just bleed it up whilst holding it on top of the disc when bled up just bolt it back up where it should go on the mounting bracket !

I agree. I built a RS turbo van and had the same problem. Spoke to Dave a Cartrack. He sold me a set of brackets for the rear cossie callipers so the sit on top of the disk. They bleed up fine. Stops on a penny no ABS though! Solid pedal. Hope this helps.

on fiesta's you can use an escort MK5 item (after slight modifiying to the length of the rod and the fiesta servo brackets) as they are alot bigger and give betetr peddle feel when using larger front's and rear disks due to the extra fluid needed to move the larger surface area pistons the same amount.
you could poss look into this also as a better option than the 90spec one as its not only the servo that has to be taken into consideration but also the master cylinder's capability to move enough fluid.

thanks for your responses, i already had a bleeding problem, the pedal went to the floor before i cured this....?
so im now satisfied the system is bled properly, i did also use a pressure bleeder. The pedal does get firm but it just has this travel before the firmness?
anyone else got any ideas

XRSI.......what your saying is exactly the conclusion i had already reached. These calipers are a lot bigger so obviously are going to need more fluid.
The master cylinder is what i changed for a bigger item, 90 spec are 23mm, pre 90 spec are 22mm, i know this is like fuck all difference, but it has to be better?
Its on an escort, so im guessin the fiesta ones dont fit them very well? Been to the local scrappy today and was looking at a mk5, they have big servo's and cylinders. U reckon that will fit?

the mk5 items prob fit better onto a mk4 escort then a fiesta so worth a try, all you would have to do is measure the distance of a mk4 servo rod and a mk5 servo rod and then cut and reweld the mk5 to get the same distance as the mk4 items!
if you are going to use a mk5 one, try an 1800 zetec or TD one as they are the bigger ones!
