Default Series 2 cutting out - help needed!

A few weeks ago my rs turbo started playing up - I put my foot down in 3rd, and it cut out at about 3 1/2 thousand revs.

After a couple of minutes it started again but since then it has done it a number of times whilst stationary, and decellerating etc, so there seems to be no patturn to when it does it. It's now starting to happen more frequently, and is getting on my tits a bit, so I wondered if anyone had any ideas.

It also takes several minutes to start if the engine gets warm and I switch off and go to start it shortly after (eg when getting petrol). Has been doing this for quite a long tome, but thought it was a minor problem at the time.

The fuel pump relay appears to be ok, and you can hear the fuel pump surge when you turn the ignition on. Some people have suggested that the distributor might be on the way out

Any advise would be appreciated, as I dont particularly want to start throwing money at the car if I'm replacing the wrong bits!

Cheers

hi lads a slow starting problem can be caused by a stainless steel exhaust as this sits closer to the starter motor and heats it up i put a xr2i starter on my old turbo as it is shorter and didn't suffer from the heat as much.
i will consult my brother about non starting though as this all sounds familiar but cant remember if it was dizzy or sensor will return to this for you later all the best.

Seemed to be sparking ok at the weekend, and likewise the plugs were dry, so doesn't seem to be flooding. My dad wondered if it could be to do with one of the sensors, but doesn't know enough about them to know which one etc.

I've been trying to get hold of the RS owners club registrar for series 2's, as he offers free technical advise, but sadly no joy as yet

As for the slow starter, would this cause it to not start at all, or would it just take ages?

i spoke to my cousin and the mechanics at my uncles garage, and they said it wont be the starter. they said mine was turning over fine. got a new dizzy coming now, so we'll see if that makes a difference.

My 1.6i was an MFi so could well be a similar problem if your turbo is as well. wont hurt swapping the fuel filter either, well unless its new which would make that a pointless task

good luck with it anyway

Put a new fuel filter on when we serviced it about two months ago, so don't think it will be that, but could be something to do with the pump i suppose.

got a new dizzy coming now, so we'll see if that makes a difference.
Will be interesting to see if the new dizzy sorts it out for you, ill keep me fingers crossed!

Just as a matter of interest, has yours ever cut out? How long has it not been starting when its warm?

i know what you mean, but sadly, its my only car.

Having said that, i drove to leicester and back a few weeks ago, and it was fine all the way there, but the following day it cut out about four times in the space of a few miles...

bloody cars!

Alright lads,
Sorry to butt in, but my S1 has a very similar problem - it always cuts out turning right round roundabouts. Had to push the thing a mile home today wi my bro. No matter what speed etc it just dies, horrible feeling cos I can be doing 40 or 50 and I just feel it lurch, throttle does nothing, dropping down through the gears does nothing, and it just grinds to a halt
Makes me want to take a match to it

Default I had just posted a message for same problem

My cossie has started doing this in the last couple of days. When i start it from warm it cutts off after couple of minutes of running and this could be when driving or stationary or what ever. Then it takes me a minute or two to get it started again. I have read this thread and you have given me a lot to check out thanx but has anyone actually solved the problem yet? This is obviously common.

lot of replies on here bit taxing to read them all so sorry if someone has suggested it already.

this is for your warm start problem....check the fuel pressure is being maintained, literally whip off the air filter, and gently push the metering flap down, if it flies down and springs back rapidly theres no fuel pressure, if there is pressure it will rise steadily and smoothly. Probably best doing it in the morning after its sat for a while......and if your not sure if there is pressure there, run it turn it off and compare how the flap moves then to how it did before, u'll soon get an idea of what i mean.

Mine did the same, started reasonably, not the best but reasonably cold, then like u say, stop in the petrol station, come back out and 3 minutes worth of cranking later and a lot of and it started again, while everyone is looking over muttering "look at that crappy A reg cabriolet that wont start"

And as for your cuting out...........likely to be the dizzy......mines on its way out although my only symptoms are the occasional spectacular back firing under load makes everyone jump and look ha ha but can get annoying when ur trying to whip ass.

about the only way to do it is to get another dizzy.....

if any of this is the same as your problem let me know and ill help u fault find
