Default Running in, Help required

ive just had a an engine rebuilt, its a 2.0 zetec, here is a bit of info about it:

its got fast road cam,
new pistons,
new bearings
3angled seats,
ported head,
new valves,
cam belt kit

Cant think of anything else and its for my fiesta and its the first engine work ive ever done so i dont want to wreck it after all this time and effort, so my question is how do i run in the engine? ive allready purchased millers running in oil but i want to know:

What should i do when i first start the engine?
How long to leave the oil in?
Should i change the oil and the filter after a set period?
How many miles should i do?
Should i use the car through the rev range or do i keep it below a certain rpm?

anything else i should know?

thanks in advance

ok heres what i would do,

check that everything is sound before firing the engine.
on start up make sure oil presure etc is good and leave at idle for a while
and listen for any abnormal sounds.
after that if all sounds and looks good go for a drive avoiding steep hills
that will put load on the engine.
keep the revs down below 3500rpm.
i would do my first oil and filter change at about 800-1000km
running in should only take about 1500km.

good luck hope your engine goes well

What should i do when i first start the engine? turn over by hand first,to check no valve to piston contact
How long to leave the oil in? fresh oil in obviously, cheapest you can by for runnin in
Should i change the oil and the filter after a set period? oil and filter change after approx 1000miles,quality oil this time
How many miles should i do? approx 1000 miles, though your tuner will advise you on whats best
Should i use the car through the rev range or do i keep it below a certain rpm? dont be rev happy, but as the more miles you do take it up a little,
a new set off plugs b4 being tuned wont do any harm, hope that helps, sure peeps will have more to add that ive forgot[/b]

hi mate, most of whats written above is correct but all i will also say is that when on initial start up dont let it idle, keep engine speed at about 2000rpm to 2500rpm to keep the oil pressure up and also reduces stress on the camshaft faces. this is critical when running in new camshafts.

change oil and filter after 500 miles. and as for running in oil dont use the cheapest oil you can get, why use shit oil when its first miles are its most critical to bedding in properly and lasting.

do the first 50 miles or 2 hours running time to bed in the cams e.t.c. a crankshaft doenst need bedding in as they are machined surfaces that run within an oil film anyway, the crank never actually makes contact with the engine bearings.

i would give the pistons and rings about 200 miles before using revs over 4500rpm.

the other thing i would seriously think about is to get the car setup ASAP because incorrect fuelling/ignition timing can cause lots of problems from detonation, to bore washing e.t.c.

when runnin an engine in you use shitty oil as that helps the bedding in,using good oil has better protection which doesn't really let the parts bed in properly, this applies to a turbo motor but dont know if its the same for n/a

ahmmmm,
sorry to jump in,
my 5 penny worth

turn engine by hand to check no contact between piston vavles>

remove spark plus and crank engine till oil light goes out, this helps get oil flowing in top end and turbos ....
replace plugs & start engine

use an average mineral oil to run an engine in, Synthetic prohibits the bedding process i think this is what is ment by shitty oil... but it must be new stuff

crank shafts don't need bedding in, but the bearings on the crank and rods do need bedding in! avoid high revs and stress loading (driving in wrong gear)
if camshaft has been renewed it must not be left to idle on start up, but and heres the strange bit, if a new bottom end then avoid increased revs at start up.............myself iv'e always struggled on this little bit. so i do a 1800 to 2200 revs for 5mins then let idle at 1200 to 1500 if possible.

cheers.........Ken
