Why is the light next to the clock on mk5 flashing?
My mates just bought a mk5 escort, trouble is, the little red light next to the clock keeps flashing quickly when the car is running, and when u turn the engine off the fuel pump continues to run, draining the battery. Any ideas how to sort this? Off out now, will check back later

That's the standard ford alarm just unplug it from the box in the drivers footwell i think it's the plug nearest to the bulkhead it's a gray box with 3 plugs going into it i think?? it controls the central locking too it won't affect the locking if you unplug the right one my girl friends car had the same problem then one day she could'nt start it so i unpluged it a it started stright away it's something to do with the standard immobiliser which are "crap" get an aftermarket one put in

Your friend has a PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) problem mate. The red light should illuminate for 5-seconds when the ignition is turned and then go out if it's working correctly (if it stays on for 20seconds, it indicates a malfunction). It should only flash consistently when the central locking had been activated.
As Antony said, the easiest way to get around it is to disconnect the terminal behind the driver's kick-panel, however, I wouldn't think it would use enough battery power to drain it, it's one LED!! And if your battery is draining, I would imagine the problem's elsewhere.
Personally, I'd leave it how it is as that light would act as a burglar deterrent.
Does the alarm function properly anyway?
Hope this helps,
CheeRS

Sorry guys, been away for the weekend, thanks for all the replies!
Its the fuel pump continuously running with the ignition off that drains the battery, however I will unplug the alarm plug in the footwell and see what happens. Interestingly, behind the steering wheel cowling there is a proximity immobiliser (factory fit ford one) with a key taped to it. This key doesn't fit the ignition either so it must have had a new set of locks including the ignition at some point? He got it from the auction (surprise!) to use for work but hasn't been able to yet cos of these probs. I'll do the unplug thing and see if that works
however, I wouldn't think it would use enough battery power to drain it, it's one LED!!
