contact stu at motorsport developments. he is working on the supply of these.

basically the ecu sends a pulse to the ignition amplifier to tell it to make the coil spark. that is normally done on a cossie 4 times per 2 crank revolutions, and the distributor sends the spark to the right cylinder.

with a coil pack, you run what is known as wasted spark. that means that a spark is sent to 2 cylinders at a time, one of which uses it, and the other doesn't (so it's wasted - apart from wearing the electrode of the spark plug ). but if you were to use the standard output from the ecu and ignition amplifier, the coil pack wouldn't know which pair of cylinders to send the spark to. so you need some extra electronics to get a signal from the ecu that is based on both the crank position sensor and the phase sensor. that signal then needs to go to 2 ignition amplifiers, or a twin amplifier, that then tells the coil pack which side to fire a spark to it's connected pair.

Everything you will need for the coilpack conversion itself, including teh loom can be seen here:

I presume youve already dealt with the phase sensing side of things?

Oh Dear...
The YB engines distributor doesnt just house the rotor and cap, it also houses and runs a very important sensor called the "Phase sensor"

Your going to have to mount this sensor in the head on your zetec ideally.. again, you can get ideas on how by looking in my webshop again and looking at the parts used to remove a YB distributor and relocate the sensor to the inlet camshaft.

Lots will have done it on here, so maybe put a post in general discussion for guidance.

here's one way.. use the standard Zetec cam sensor, add target pegs to the cam in the right positions.

Doesn't the Zetec cam sensor work off the cam lobe and pick up cylinder no. one identification only or are you using this set up to get each cylinder identified?

this was done to work with Marelli cosworth management, so replicates the sensor that would be in the cossie distributor.
The original Zetec sensor target is a single lobe on the cam which is no use to Marelli, so got ground off
Both systems use the cam sensor to indicate the absolute engine position in the 720 degree 4-stroke cycle.. EEC4 uses a single lobe, Marelli uses 2 lobes, but they both perform the same function.

Mmm, good stuff, gives me an idea about how to go distributerless on another engine.

it looks like i may have 1 of them sensors, could the flywheel be modified to do the same job??

as i have a modified fly wheel that has a pick up every 90 degrees ???

no , you need both sensors, one on the crank/flywheel like you describe to indicate RPM, and one on the cam that runs at half engine speed to indicate absolute engine position.
