Default MK4 XR3i gearbox problem

Hello,

I have ran into an awkward situation with my gearbox, it appears that it is generating a tremendously loud whining noise. The noise is apparent when I accelerate (at all revs) and the noise degrades when I decelerate but along with deceleration comes a different sound, something that I can only describe as a scraping/dragging sound. The whining sound begins in 1st gear as soon as the car starts moving, the noise remains through all gears and it increases in volume at higher speeds, if I push down on the clutch until the pedal reaches the floor, or if I go into neutral, the whining and other noises instantly go away.

I think it is worth mentioning that the entire clutch assembly (including clutch bearing) was replaced around 1300kms ago and the gearbox oil was drained and refilled with fresh oil at the same time. The problem occurred one day without any previous symptoms (I had just started the car when the problem came along), I was using the car on a daily basis prior to the issue and there were never any abnormalities in relation with the gearbox/clutch.

Any help/advice would be appreciated !

Sounds bolloxed to me. Id just replace it they are cheap enough. Or stick a diesel bo on it, better ratio

Are ypu running more than std power? My old s2 lunched boxes that much i became good friends with the gearbox man maybe thrust release bearing or a bad rebuild 8t happens id go and see who did it for you and ask him what could be the problem

if it goes away when you put your foot on the clutch pedal you might be lucky and it be something to do with the clutch, but it sounds like something in the box when its under load.

I overspeeded my xr3i on the m25 one day against a mate and later that night I could hear a faint whine under load which just kept getting worse and worse over the course of the next few weeks, sounded like I had a supercharger on the car, sounded ace but the box eventually locked up and spat the contents over someone's driveway.

over speeded? Whats that posh fir missed a gear?

The engine is 100% stock and TBH I'm a very careful driver as I like to save petrol, so it is hardly under a lot of strain.

I carried out the clutch work myself and I used the car on a daily basis for roughly 1300kms (short journeys and a 600km trip) and the car showed absolutely no signs of malfunction.

This issue occurred about three weeks ago after working underneath the car in order to open the bonnet (release mechanism had literally snapped!) the noise started as soon as I moved the car from my workspace (I had used the car a few hours prior to this event and everything was perfect), it's probably just a pure coincidence and I cannot recall even going near the gearbox, but I guess anything is worth mentioning...

The whining noise sounds very similar to the sound of straight cut gears.
