Default xr3i Lost 5th gear

Well everybody. My car's been off the road a while but soon I'm going to be stuck into it again. One of the reasons I stopped driving it was because the last time I did I was driving down the motorway and it jumped out of 5th gear. Wouldn't stay in 5th gear so drove home in 4th. I got home and dipped the gearbox oil to find no level at all registering on the stick. I measured according to the haynes. The oil was last changed about 3 years previous with not too much mileage done. Way less than average anyway. I do everything on the car myself but admittedly I don't know anything about gearboxes. I can drop it out but don't know much about what's going on inside. Is there something simple I should check first or is it mashed because of lack of oil. Any info appreciated as always. Thanks.

There's a filler plug mate undo that and see if there's any oil in it

Yeah I know , I was just a bit puzzled why it was gone low because there's no evidence of a leak.

True but I made a dipstick relevant to what the manual says about how much oil goes in the box. There was no level on it so doesn't look too good really. New box I guess.

The level in the box is basically fill it through the filler hole until it comes out then you know its full

I just made one via haynes and do it through the filler hole.

Fair enough. Anyway, yer if thats not registering owt then you've deffo run 5th dry. Drop the box slightly (remove cradle and support) then just pop off the end plate and have a look

They are easy to take off. Personally if you need a new box id get a diesel box and puma linkage, makes a hell of a difference
