If it has the inlet at the front of the engine, it's an SE, and they'll fit.

The answer is yes, as he said it's a 1600.

Disagree, the engine was launched exclusively with this car, never have I known or heard of a 'silvertop' engine and these cars in the same sentence.

Nope, they were the Silvertop version of the Zetec SE, not the Zetec E as seen in the older Fiesta's etc.

I stand corrected! I thought the early ones were fitted with the same 1600 as the late Escorts did.

I thought the only cars a zetec se sat in was the fiesta and puma. 1600 Zetec E's were in the escort and focus, focus having seen 3 versions of the zetec E??????

No, being the Focus was cutting edge, it couldn't be seen with that engine, hence the engine was launched with the car.

The ONLY Zetec-E engines fitted to these were the 1800 and 2L.

The ZS merely borrowed the Focus engine, that being a Sigma, or SE as you know it.

As I said above there was only 2 versions of the 'E' in the Focus, and two SE's.

The 1600 Zetec-E was fitted in the last of the Escorts and early Mondeos and is affectionately known as 'silvertop'.

Got ya. I thought the focus had the silver top in early models, then the black top and later a revised blacktop hence the timing belt tensioners were different to the first blacktop?

You have what is known as phase 1 and phase 2 engines, the early ones had a metal cam cover with Zetec S engraved, which is what you are thinking of, while the latter had a black cam cover, either way it's still the same engine!

The 'silvertop' is what is references the old engine, i.e. the Zetec-E.

A 'black top', is used to refer to a 2L Zetec.

Not necessarily, as the 2.0 came in silvertop and blacktop flavours, as did the Zetec SE's.

Usually when someone says a blacktop, they are referring to a 2L Zetec, phase 1 and 2 typically denote the Sigma.

or if you can get hold of 1, an FRP engine.
Ash you will not get 160bhp with them mods you just said, someone I know has a zs with complete FRP conversion headwork, cams ete etc and he only just see's 146bhp and all that cost him 2k.... 2k fuck me Ł500 on a 1.6 S (sigma) engine would easily see 140-150bhp who in there right mind would spend Ł2000 on an engine for just 146bhp when for Ł1000 you could build a turbo engine with 250+bhp MADNESS!!!

Ł2k using the right second hand bits would see 160+, bike bodies, LM4s, Miltek 4-1, a touch of head work and some rod bolts.

What i was getting at why would you spend 2k on an engine for not much gain when you could build a bloody good engine from scratch for that with double, treble the power

Different power delivery, personal preference I guess!

Would rather chuck the 2k at the chassis though.
