Valve seat cuts and lapping
Ok folks, as some of you may know, we have a brand new 2wd head for the cossie.
Now, we have to put valves in, etc... so what's the score ?
Is that an easy DIY job ? I have the paste and the sucker tool...
The seats look like they have the three angle cuts already, so I take it that doesn't need to be done.
Once the valves are lapped in, how do you clean the head to make sure all the abrasive compound has gone away ?
Would I be better off paying someone to do this for me ?
Thanks in advance.

its a quite easy once you know what to look for after lapping in.you use two types of grinding paste, fine and coarse.
basicly a bit of coarse on the valve seat or valve and do the lapping motion with the sucker, and after a basic surface grind proceed to the fine paste.and what your looking for is a fine circular line in the valve seat and valve seal face,if not sure leave it to a engineering shop, you can remove all the paste with petrol afterwards
also when its done right you should be able to turn the head upsidedown pour petrol in the combustion chamber with the valves in position and none should leak through

not worth the effort - there's 16 of the buggers - pay a shop about Ł50 to do it properly - if you don't get it right, it could cost you a head gasket if it has to come off again.

can defo be done diy, new valves and head?? try it first with the fine paste, you will get the idea, could take ten mins per valve to do properly ... you will as above see a thin fine line, in the right light when you lift the valve out, try it but it is a boring tedious job, though you may get a sense of satisfaction from it once finished..
with a new head and valves in good condition it is dead easy. just use fine paste (a decent quality one, not the Holts etc shite). As Damo says, a few minutes a valve and clean up will see it done. I've just done mine, lapped all 16 valves and fitted new stem seals and valves back in, in an evening easy.
