I have a series 2 Escort Turbo, i have done a fair bit to the engine and now i'm ready to upgrade the turbo.

Can anyone answer the following...

What PSI will a standard turbo run at before struggling?
Is there an easy upgrade or should i go to turbo specialist and have one built?

Also i am considering a straight cut gearbox but on my last trip to Burton Power the two chaps behind the counter tried to talk me out of it. Has anybody had a straight cut box? Is it that unbearable - it's a second car and mainly used for santa pod

 

What's been done to the engine, are you still on the standard injectors?

 

I think 18psi is the limit but have heard of people pushing past this,
Depends on what you want really alot of people are putting the mtx box or even a later box, my mate runs a straight cut box and it's the only one that's lasted years, his is a daily car

 

I have been running 22 psi for about two years and not had any problems - that being said though i don't even give it full throttle.

I have a steel bottom end, "stage 3" head - larger valves and a standard cam. bigger inter-cooler and just fitted but not tested an aqua mist kit.

It is still a mfi head, and i havent changed the injectors but i am all ears for suggestions ...

As for the straight cut box - i think i am sold it sounds like it will be a good investment.

Do you know what brand of box he had?

I have found an old thread on how to change from mfi to efi and have started keeping an eye out for the bits.

Keeping in mind that i will now be going efi can i upgrade my turbo now for one that will still be compatable once i do the efi conversion?

 

what sort of power are you aiming for?

 

I'm not really sure - i'd like to do a sub 13.5 at santa pod.

To be honest i haven't used a my rst in about three years its just been sitting in a garage. Last time i used it i hung around with a crowd of boy racers and we all had big plans for our motors but little budgets. I do see that crowd anymore but have some cash to spend and am bored sh*tless of driving a freelander.

I would like as much power as possible but i don't want to have to rebuild every time i use it.

 

I would service it before you do anything,If the petrol is from 3yrs ago then drain it,

Have you put a m.o.t on it,could be just remains now

you can't upgrade the injectors on MFI

std turbo I would say don't push it anymore than 13-14psi,do you have a chipped ECU and a uprated -31 actuator?

even with the right spec and a setup the mfi will limit you at best to around 230bhp without messing with silly 5th injectors,but that won't be on a std turbo,will need at least a stage 2 T3.

I would say if your chasing power then either efi or zetec turbo.

 

If I were you I would go for a decent stage 3 T3, a set of 55's and some standalone management that a tuner of your choice is happy to map.

Edited to say you will probably want an EFI head too..

 

lol yeah i have started a major service.

I have taken the head off to have a look at bores etc all looks good. Drained all the oil and change of filters. There was fcukall petrol in there anyway but before i change i want to think about changing the tank for a lightweight foam filled one.

There was a bit of rust on it but i have provisionally booked it in with a refinishers for when i have completed all the work.

I do have a -31 actuator.

I think i have decided that i will be going efi and also a custom spec turbo but the bank manager will decided for sure.

If your driving a freelander at the moment just get the thing on the road. You will love it! Went from a 3i cab / auto mondeo, back to my series 1 running 180 ish brake and its the nuts!!!! 200bhp is a sensible limit for fwd anyway, unless your chasing numbers and #uarter mile times! Spend the money on suspension and brakes it will be a more all round fun car for a b road blast!

 

Your not wrong mate - just been to look at my rst and its 3/4s rust that bad there isnt really enough to weld to ...

so i bought a new one on the way home will have a busy weekend swapping everything over but just cant wait anylonger to get it back on the road!!!
